pulling the 'pumpkin'
got me a donor 72 with 3;00 gears and trying to get the pumpkin out. got the axels pulled and the 10 nuts off.
I haven't got it to break loose yet. there's nothing left to hold it there. is it just the tight fit coming out or??
im thinking maybe a come a long for tension and tap with a hammer..thanks

Re: pulling the 'pumpkin'
There may be copper washers around the studs that must be chiseled off.
then tap a good strong putty knife or two behind it and work it off.
sometimes they're stuck pretty good.

You can use your floor jack under the yoke to break the diff loose from the housing.

sure wished it was a 3:50 instead of the 3:00 thanks....

Re: pulling the 'pumpkin'
heard that. I think the 3:00 is going to be too much. the 3:70 sure seems low to me though
may wait to see if I can find a 3:50 gear. it gets terrible MPG

Re: pulling the 'pumpkin'
3.00 is too much gear for a 240. I have a stock 67 F100, 240, 3-speed manual. The truck had 3.70's, I switched to a 3.00 set, and now have a 3.25 set in it. The 3.25 is still too much gear for the stock coffee grinder 240 engine. Ford factory installed the 3.70's because it was the best match for that engine/transmission combination. I have heard others say that this works better with an automatic transmission but I don't have that personal experience.
My experience is that I have to ride the clutch a lot with the 3.00's and 3.25's to get the truck rolling. It is very hard on the clutch. At highway speeds, it lacks power for passing or climbing hills. I generally lose speed when I come to a hill. In a word "gutless". The only upside is that there was a small increase in gas mileage, maybe 2-3 mpg. Most assume that because the 240 is a small 6 cylinder engine, these trucks should get better gas mileage than they do. Not so. I am planning to put the 3.70's back in the truck.

I have the 300-6 , auto, in my shortbed with the 3.70 gearing. I think it’s the best gearing for this truck, wouldn’t change it.67 short box wrote: it gets terrible MPG
I don’t think my mileage is that great either @ about 14/gal.

Re: pulling the 'pumpkin'
3.00's will suffer, especially with a tall first gear and tall tires. It'll be OK with an auto and / or some lower profile tires. I'm a big fan of the 3.31's in my Jag and wish I'd installed them in my Mustang when I had it. 3.25's were a little too tall, 3.50's just smoked the tires too easily in third.

ok guys, im not doing this change. yall have been there and done that. if anything, I may try 3:50 or im thinking 235x75 tires
I have 235x70 now. don't know if a couple of inches taller will matter. cant hurt. anyway, thanks for saving me a lot of work for nothing.
I appreciate the help.....

That should be perfect. I buy the 235 x75 tires for mine. Looks good on the truck.67 short box wrote:I may try 3:50 or im thinking 235x75 tires...
