No not a rabbit hole at all. Those iron covers were used on 289 302 and 351W and some marine engines in boats. so they were kindof common at one point. Just really heavy though.

So now you need out figure out which version 302/289 you have. The rockers are pre '78ish and it has a 3 bolt balancer (which means it's 28oz). I assume Mercury ordered industrial spec motors which could have a bunch of different compression, cam choices and mounting options.

Ironically my motor is running a Mallory Unilite dist.
I am gonna pull this motor. The heads are 351w heads. How do I determine if its a 302 or 289?
this motor is turning into a disaster.
If i tear it down to rebuild, will I have to by mercury marine parts?
Pull the spark plugs then stick a wood dowel in a spark plug hole and rotate the motor using a socket on the crank bolt. Mark the dowel at both the bottom and top of the stroke.
302 has a 3.00” stroke
289 has a 2.87” stroke
There should be an ID tag on the block near the starter. ID serial numbers are listed on the Merc website.

unfortunately the valve cover gasket had been leaking for a while and that area is covered with sludge. I am pulling the motor in the next few days. I will have to check once its out.
amazing how clean this engine is. ZERO sludge or even dirty oil built up anywhere

The link I posted above says they were all 302's but it wouldn't hurt to check. Crank and rods are the only real difference. Not a horrible thing but it would be nice to know what you have. The extra bolt for the 351 head at the water jackets just leaked with the 351w intake. The 302 shouldn't have that problem since they don't use it.

Look again. Thinking back I think the extra bolt on the 351's was only a '69-70 thing. I was trying to figure out what flavor boat this came out of. 200hp inboard was usually 18' or less runabout, longer / larger needed more HP to plane out, usually a 351w. Earlier hulls ran FE based Ford.
