302 with 351 firing order???? why?

Post by BayStYAt »

I just figured out my truck is using the 351W firing order. I have 351 heads with 302 block. I am confused as to why. any advice will be appreciated.

Thanks

Has to do with the choice of cam that is in the engine. Newer cams for the 302 switched to the 351 firing order.

I'm no expert but probably not. I'm going off what I learned from my engine build.
When I built my engine in my 72 I used the original block that had a solid lifter cam and switched it to a Ford motorsports B303 roller cam and put in a set of Howards lifters for early model 302 blocks to convert them over to a roller setup and that B303 cam was a 351 firing order.

That I do not know. I’m don’t know if the exhaust ports are the same.
You could do an online search for exhaust gaskets and see if the part numbers match.
Also, I’d be concerned that headers designed to fit in a Mustang likely won’t work in a truck.

Since you're looking at shorties anyway these are a known fit. Member Pincheweddo wrote it up in his blog. https://1967f100.blogspot.com/2013/09/3 ... 0.html?m=1 (Thanks, Pinche!)

Individual flange headers suck monkey balls. They'll bolt up the heads once but won't after heat cycling and they are prone to leakage once they heat set.

Per the original cam question, I'm pretty sure the roller 5.0 cams were 351 firing order from the factory and some anemic 302's from '80ish on. The original 5.0 ran a 351 marine profile cam in '83 and that's where the performance came from.

I ran shorties on my 85 and 86 Mustang GT's and never had a problem with leaks. Not saying they won't...just mine didn't.
What year 302 is in your truck? My Ranger has the 302 HO from a 1985 GT. It has the 351 firing order as did all the H.O. 302's from that era. Funny thing is, it was "high output" for that time. The 302 in my 2014 Mustang is as big as the 429 in my 69 bump side and has double the HP of the stock 85 engine.
