289 head question

There's a port on both heads, drivers rear and passenger front. Center of the port is blind threaded and there seems to be a port connected into the exhaust, are they heat riser ports or something?

Are we sure these are 289 heads? Can we get a wider view?

I vaguely recall from my days of messing with Windsors that some had emission connections on the back (AIR perhaps) but I would think that would post date a 289.

I didn't run the numbers myself but the paperwork I have on the original purchase from a guy on ebay says the following (numbers do match)>
-Heads fit 260-302
-Years 1963-1995
-Heads are 1967 289
-Casting numberC6AE
-Date Code 7A12 7A21 (Mid year 1967 production)
-54cc kidney shaped chambers w/9.00:1 compression

There's more but that's the basics...

I'm just going to machine a plug from 6061 aluminum and call it good. The chamber is definitely connected to the exhaust chamber so it does need closed off.

I just built a 302 for my neighbor that had those same emission holes. I machined a set of plugs out of brass and installed them with some high-temp silicone. No problems.

Do you suppose I'll be OK making them out of 6061? (That's what I have in the shop)

Search “Thermactor Plugs” there are commercially produced plugs. (though I guess if you can machine your own why not)

That's not gonna do it, it would look more like a freeze plug with a bolt hole in the middle.

I don't see why not. The exhaust is not flowing back there so it's not as hot as an exhaust pipe.

Well you need to jump on a vintage mustang forum and you could sell those plugs. I found this thread on VM that details those holes if anyone is interested in the history...gotta love California.
