Rebuild or replace Factory 2 Barrel on a 360FE

Post by Mikeincool »

I just picked up a 1969 F100 with the original 360 2 barrel and C6. I bought it from a tow company and I have not heard it run. It has no battery and someone took the rear end out. It was registered and inspected last October, so I am hoping that it was a daily driver before it ended up in a tow company yard. Someone has had the top of the Carb off and I am wondering if it is even worth trying to rebuild. I have never had much luck working on carbs and would like to know if anyone has some experience with this setup. I have zero knowledge about this engine and trans, so I would like to hear it run before I spend too much cash on the current engine. Who makes a good stock 2 barrel carb and what is a good price? Is it better to put a 4 barrel intake and new carb on before I know if the motor is any good. It is being delivered in a few days and my plan Is to put a battery in it and do something with the carburetor. Also, I have 2 ford F100 rear ends that I can put in the '69. For $1100, it looks like a pretty good truck. I know there are several unknowns, but if I can hear it run I can answer several of the big questions. Any advice would be helpful.

I would rebuild the 2bbl and get the truck running until you decide you want to do something else. they are very simple and pretty user friendly to rebuild, assuming its a Autolite 2100. The kits are like 30 bucks.

Make it your goal to check out your carb. Pretty simple.

I am learning as I go on my truck. Question, what is the correct CFM for my 360FE? I was assuming that all 2100's were the same. Yesterday I read that there is a wide range for many different applications. I think mine is 300cfm. Also, are there different rebuild kits for different CFM?

There shouldn't be a different kit for various cfm rated carbs. the cfm is different based on venturis casted into the main bodies of the carburetor. One kit should service all cfm ranges of oem 2100's.

He's exact on the only things to really watch in a 2100 are the brass emulsion tube on the bottom of the venturi crack and make em run rough. Second is watch the throttle shafts for excessive wear that cause bad vacuum rough idle. Otherwise they are the easiest thing ever.

That's for the advanced carburetor course Manny!  but yeah, Manny is right. those are wear items that should be looked at due to these components advanced ago now.

I have had good luck with the autolite 2100's. As others have said, they are relatively simple. I would add checking the power valve well for flatness. It is the one that is on the bottom of the bowl. All I have seen have been warped, allowing a minor vacuum leak. I correct with a flat handfile and finish with a piece of sandpaper on glass.

I was able to start working on the '69. I pulled the carb off and stripped it down, it is soaking in B12. My carb looks like it has been on fire at some point. Lots of soot on the inside. I will clean it out one night this week and see if it has a little life left. Thanks for all the help. I am hoping to have a dependable truck, so I am sure to have many questions along the way. I cleaned out the inside of the cab after removing the seat. Only 2 places with rust. It is in front of the seat bolts on both sides. Everything else looks good.

I ended up ordering a new 2100 300CFM online for less than $100 to my door. After a failed attempt to start, I replaced the fuel pump and now we are in business. Runs pretty good.

I did a little digging myself and could only find a bunch of junky sub-$100 new ones on Amazon (select their automotive section and search for 'Ford 2100 carburetor'), but the reviews speak to the lack of quality for most of them. I wouldn't be able to shake the worry that it was about to poop a venturi straight into my engine, so I'm going to pass on these. If Mikeincool has a better source, I'm all ears, but if he got it from Amazon, I can only suggest he take a good hard look at it and make sure nothing is loose or cracked and about to destroy his engine.
