C4 tranny question

Post by Zorm »

Kinda off topic. I have a 83 Jeep Cherokee (last of the big ones before they got small) right now I have built a 4.6 straight 6 stroker and this is in it now. I would really like to put a 351w in to the jeep. Well, I found one that includes the c4 tranny, thing is, its 2wd.

So, can a 2wd c4 be made into a 4x4 one? (remove the tail section and replace with?) What transfer case would I need to look for? would it be ok for off road, don't plan on doing any hardcore stuff.

thanks

You can make a c4 mate to a transfer case ,an old Dana 20 is a strong gear to gear case ,check the old Bronco web sites.
Now, Ford have a driver side Front diff. Jeep, chevy and Dodge have a passenger side front diff.
But some Jeep Cherokee and Grand Wagoneer (the big ones ) have a driver side diff. so you might get lucky.

On the C4, is it the heavier duty one with large bellhousing (commonly called a C5 back in the day) and converter or the smaller one that the bell is attached with the trans front pump bolts? I wouldn't run the light one with tall gears.

You can get a C4 to hold up to a lot. I am currently pushing 750hp through one of mine. Broader performance has lower first gear sets and all the necessary upgrades. Jay is the owner and a huge help when dealing with C4's.

As noted above, you can use 4x4 parts from a 73-77 Bronco C4, IF YOU CAN FIND THEM. You will need the output shaft (I sold one today for $150), the adapter housing (good luck finding one), the stub shaft (ditto), and a Dana 20 transfer case (easy to find). No other transfer cases fit.

Another option is to get an 83-84 C5 and transfer case combo from a Ranger, then rob the output shaft, adapter housing, and transfer case from it. No stub shaft in this combo. The transfer case is an aluminum case Borg Warner 1350. Everything will fit your C4 without mods. And this is a LOT easier to find and a LOT cheaper. Other transfer cases may also fit.

Be aware, BOTH scenarios REQUIRE a 1970 or later C4.
