Is there need for bucket seat brackets???

Post by 67swbranger »

Hi, so today I was gonna make up some brackets for my 67' mustang bucket seats. I put them in the truck outa curiousity, sat in them to. They seem to fit perfectly as-is :? I'm not a giant by any means, 6' tall but sitting there visibility is good, pedals are comfortable, seems right. obviously it will sink down about 2 inches when I drill holes for it but if I weld in some extra long studs and a 2" spacer it will sit the same

Long story short... lol the people on this forum that have done the conversion have put in fair amount of effort making brackets, and ford had bucket brackets from the factory I want to know if and why this is necessary

in the photo the front left seat mount bolt is near the factory hole, the right front is hanging off the edge, I think its just a matter of moving the seat back or adding in a spacer

I guess it's a matter of personal preference. In order to get the seat up to stock sitting height and angle, you'll need some kind of brackets. If you're comfortable with the way it sits and rides at the lower height, then go for it. The only thing I may caution you on is that by just adding spacers under the rails you don't have the stability a bracket would provide. No matter how tight you bolt it down, the bolts are so long that in an accident the seat can move fore, aft and sideways possibly shearing the bolts. I built a frame to bolt mine in with. You can that the stock ride height, and the seat actually leans backward at a 9* angle, is quite a bit off of the floor. http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... &start=435

Thanks for the quick reply, still months away from seeing how it rides but I'll know for sure in a few months. I personally like the large clearance between me and the steering wheel when sitting, but won't know until I actually have a steering column again

Been keeping up with your build thread for awhile, did you ever pinpoint why you had so much orange peel in the interior paint? I had a similar issue on a 70' fairlane, fairly sure it was just temperature based because I was painting in an outdoor paintbooth in 50ish degree weather....

Yeah, it was actually a combination of things.

#1 Insufficient air volume. I used my small compressor because my big compressor had a broken regulator. HVLP gun uses a lot of air volume. This causes poor atomization of the spray pattern.
#2 Not enough reducer. Paint too thick for nozzle diameter and above condition.
#3 Technique. First time I'd attempted to spray color and didn't practice. Looked great wet, but then it cured ugly.

I'll know better next time :D

Like Busboy mentioned, the position you have your seat showing there will not be that way if you put the in cab tank in. Here's a good shot of how it would be with the stock OEM brackets mounted and the true location. http://www.fordification.com/images/sea ... uckets.jpg

'Install the steering column and steering wheel and it'll be in your face. The brackets are angled and allow a more comfortable seating position.

On my '70, the bucket seat bracket holes were pre-dimpled from the factory. Just position your drill bit and have at it. See the arrows drawn with a Sharpie???

Here is the end result with '70 Mach 1 buckets and TMI Sport Foam & upholstery. If doing it again, I would not install the Sport Foam because it gets real close between the steering wheel and the seat bottom. Luckily, I'm not a big guy and have a set of low backs to play with. These highbacks might end up in my 68 Mustang. Second, high backs will hit the back glass. I added a 1/8-inch shim under the backrest bumpstop so the seat back is move vertical. Lowbacks will fit fine... even with an in-cab tank.
