Can I salvage the seat?

Post by Hanford43 »

Just got a 1970 and while the cloth seat is in great shape, there were mice/cats in the cab at some point and it reeks! Its so bad you smell like it just from sitting in it! Will a good shampooing do the trick, or would it be better to just get an entirely new seat? Its a dumb question but the cloth seat is worth saving if at all possible.

I doubt you'll ever get that smell out.

You could try removing the cover, it's fairly easy. Once the cover is removed, hang cover outside for a few days spraying it down and scrubbing it with upholstery cleaner, then let it air dry for a few days outdoors. Then spray it down with Febreze or Lysol. You can buy replacement foam fairly reasonably, I'd just toss that and get new foam. This would be a good time to replace any springs in the seat if any are broken. If you don't feel comfortable doing any of that, an upholstery shop should be able to refurb it for under $500.

IMO, the only thing your going to be able to safetly salvage is the seat frame. the foam has been a litter box for the critters and its soaked everything up. ditch all the material, and all the foam. cleaned the frame up with water and baking soda. spray paint it checked for broken springs and let an shop recover it.

You know, this kind of thing makes me hate cats even more. If that's possible . . . Probably not.

Although, I have heard they taste just like chicken . . . Or, was it old truck seats?

Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in garages. (Apologies to Kenneth Grahame.)

OK, now a serious reply.

After having to deal with this odor issue several times in rental property, I would advise you to sell the truck!

OK, you're not going to sell it, huh?

If you want to get rid of the smell, get rid of everything porous and paint everything else. I am not kidding. Short of burning it, I have never found a way to completely eliminate the odor. ESPECIALLY, when the humidity rises. It's just there.

We had to remove carpets and padding. Then use bleach on concrete floors. THEN PAINT THEM to control the smell. Same with wood floors. I think we even put 4 mil plastic down under the carpet/pad.

I would ask you to let me know if you find a way to really, totally eliminate that odor but I no longer have any rental property and there damn sure ain't gonna be any cats in my vehicles! Good luck - I hope it turns out "cat-free".

There are various products out there that work well including some industrial stuff. If it's bad enough, call a funeral home and ask for advice. Seriously.

Baking soda and fabreeze works pretty well.

Guys who brag about hating cats,......okaaaaaay!

Start scouting out a good replacement bench seat. I like the '73-'79 seats better. A little more comfortable IMO.
