Changing Gear Ratios: What Would I Need?

I have a '67 F250 Camper Special with a 4.10 or 4.11 rear end (sorry, I think it's a 4.11, but I don't remember for sure). What would I need to change it to 3.73 or 3.54? Just the ring and pinion? The whole rear diff? Would it be easier/cheaper to find a different rear end in a junk yard, and swap the whole thing?

You just need the ring and pinion gears. Might as well but new bearings and seals in while your at it. Do yourself a favor and find a rear end shop to set your gears, you'll be glad you did. Pull the chunk, take it to them and let them set it up correctly. I did mine and I'm not sure it's 100% right but I'm rolling the dice. :hmm:

If you are going to learn how this is one of the easiest to do. In addition you will also need shims to set pinion depth, a new crush sleeve and a dial gauge to set backlash. There are rebuild kits that have all the bearings, shims, gaskets, seals and some Prussian blue to check gear mesh pattern.

Not with a Dana 60
you will also need a new carrier.
I think it's a 3.90 and up take a different size .
There might be a shim to put under the ring gear to help some applications. :hmm:

I agree with Sargentrs on doing yourself a favor.
Since my shop and myself are not set up for it. :lol: I am going to take mine to a rear end shop.
68 CS with the 4:10. I am going with 3:54.

Don't let that scare ya ,it's just the carrier not the whole case.
I don't think they're all that expensive.
Or maybe just swap a used assembely ?

A gear change in the Dana 60 is more difficult than the 9 inch but totally doable. Spicer(Dana) has the instructions on their website. They say you need a bunch of specialized tools to properly set the pinion height in the housing. I found most of them in Ebay for a decent price. The thing I haven't got is the housing spreader. The spreader makes it easier to push the carrier in & out while shimming the carrier side to side. This shimming is needed to set gear engagement.
I did find this link if you really want to try yourself. It has a good explanation of the process & doesn't use the special tools.

on dana 60s is 4.10 down and 4.56 up for swaps. So 3.54s and 3.73s will work in the 4.10 rear. I would not use any thing but a 3.54 if spending the money to change it all out.
