What stall converter?
I've finally got my truck back and the road and think I might go to a higher stall converter.
I have a 302 with a 270h comp cam with a c6 with a stock converter. The truck doesn't pull through red lights or die in gear, but I feel it might would like a
little looser stall. The description from comp said it's the biggest cam to run with a stock converter. I won't be racing, but I wouldn't mind a little more performance.
I was thinking maybe 2000-2400? All opinions are welcomed.

Re: What stall converter?
I think you are on the right track, any looser (higher stall) and mileage will suffer. What rear end ratio are you running and what size rear tires? Converter stall (actual real world) is very sensitive to things like gear ratios, tire size, cam profile, and vehicle weight. With such a moderate step up in stall, you should do well, though. Let me guess...it feels like you are pulling a trailer until 2500 RPM's and then it takes off like a rocket?

3.25 gears. With 255/70r 15. I've only really drove the truck twice since I've had it back together, so I might wait and see how it does with a little more driving too. I guess I'm just sort of thinking out loud so to speak, Chad67 thanks for the opinions though.

I am thinking of running that same cam in my truck 302.....Does it lope? you have video of it running?cole71 wrote:I've finally got my truck back and the road and think I might go to a higher stall converter.

Re: What stall converter?
You want more performance out of it put a set of 3.70 in it
You wont be happy with a higher stall and those 3.25 highway gears

Re: What stall converter?
TimmyTim, it does have a decent lope. I can upload a video later.
tnlprt, so you think I'm fine with my stock converter? Just needs more gear?

Re: What stall converter?
That cam comes in at 1500 RPM unless when you degree it you advanced or retarded it
Right where your factory convertor should be stall wise
Put some gears in it and never look back

Re: What stall converter?
Ok. I think it might have been 1800-5800, but I think I might go with some gears. There probably won't be much to gain with going from 3.25 to 3.50?

Re: What stall converter?
Hello, why do you think that you need to raise the stall on the converter?
What is your truck doing that has your concern, or NOT doing....?
A lot more discussion is involved in raising stall speed on a street driven truck........everyone wants higher stall without understanding how a converter works............there is something that I discussed either on here or another tran's forum that involves STR= stall torque ratio..
this subject NEVER comes up when you buy a converter from a reseller...because they do not understand what it means,,
If you decide to go with a performance converter, buy one from the BUILDER, this is not a sales pitch....I AM RETIRED
This formula is of GREAT concern to drag racers, not so much to red lite runner's..ONCE again, tell me why you think that you need to increase your stall speed.....With a tach connected, all 4 wheels chocked, Brakes applied, emer. brake on. Pull the trans in low, left foot on the brake, rite foot on the throttle & floor it for 3 seconds, no more...........what does your tach peak out at...this is called flash stall.........you will need to drive the truck to get the real stall that it needs.........and A LOT MORE INFO.......................Donnie

Flash stall(holding brakes) shows you ure current stall speed correct Just want to make sure I understand what youre sayingDonnie wrote:Hello, why do you think that you need to raise the stall on the converter?

Re: What stall converter?
Thanks for the info Donnie. I don't have a tach on the truck. Like I mentioned the truck idles in gear and doesn't stall out except for twice (idle might have been a little low). Like I said I've only had the truck out twice driving. I guess I should really drive it more to see if I need one or not. Also, like I mentioned above I'm kinda just thinking out loud so to speak. Just trying to get some input from you guys.
Specs:
302 with 270h comp cam. The info said it is the largest cam that can be ran with a stock tq.
0.030 with flat top pistons
600cfm edelbrock with performer intake and shorty headers into 2.25 pipes with flowmasters.
c6 trans with 3.25 gears running 255/70r15 tires as of now.

Re: What stall converter?
This is an answer to Timmy, on the flash stall, the answer is sort of a yes with some explanation's, doing a 3 second "hold the brakes & floor it"
will give you a close estimate, first of all, most likely a wheel will spin, & the acc. pump shot of fuel can throw the spec off a bit..
A line loc is needed to lock foreward & reverse to prevent wheel spin & a few more seconds is needed for a real stall...\ But for the sake of our conversation, this is as close as you can get to find your stall.. CAUTION, doing this on a weak trans can wreck havoc..
The converter generates a LOT of heat doing this test, always take a drive after testing to cool the fluid..
And if a wheel breaks loose, or the engine flares up, rpm increase, foreward clutch slipping? that means something in the trans is possibly not holding..Don't repeat this test often, try it once -------then maybe again in a few days, try again....fluid goes south at about 220 degrees...
Synthetic will stand more heat, but I like Type F,,,in all C6's...............Donnie

Re: What stall converter?
cole the 270 comes off the line much better than the thumper. The thumper would probably be ok with a 2500 stall. The thumper makes the exh much louder also. But Im real happy the the 270. Works the stock convertor and sounds good, no stumble off line....
