Hawkspring's '69 F250 Ranger project

Post by Hawkspring »

I have been busy doing a few things on the '69 since I purchased it. I intend to document the progress here. Before you ever leave on a trip, it's best to have a destination in mind. I'm limited on time right now since I will be headed back to some training and then ship duty in early 2014. My goals for the truck are pretty conservative. I will start with the mechanicals and safety items. Once I have those in hand I will work on the interior. The real dismantle/blast/paint rebuild stuff will have to wait.

I have built 3 supercharged late model mustangs, run road course and drag strip, as well as built a 4x4 toyota. However, I have never owned or worked on a vintage carb engine. Crazy, huh? I am having a blast learning how to do the old school mechanicals. Learning is my addiction, and this truck has me reading hard!

Day 1: On delivery it had a miss and the lifter's were noisy. It had recently been in for $1000 worth of tune-up stuff so I wasn't sure what the issue was. The receipt said, rebuilt carb, fuel pump and lines, battery and charging system, plug wires, oil, and filter. I thought it was timing. My dad thought they put some aftermarket lifters in it at some point and that they were noisy. Well folks, you know you are supposed to start with the simplest explanation and troubleshoot up from there right? I never checked the oil, since the PO had just had the work done on it and was driving it. When I got it home I found the dip stick bone dry. It took 3.5 quarts to fill it! :nono:

Day 2: I worked on the paint. Cleaned it real well, and set to work with some rubbing compound. The paint is original and thin so I just did it by hand to get some oxidation off. Afterward I used some acrylic glaze to put a nice shine on it and protect it (Klasse high gloss sealant glaze, tough as nails). The paint is gone, but it did make it look a lot better. The attached bed rail picture shows one side after and the other without any polish or seal.

Day 3: I wanted to get it running smooth today. I ran seafoam into the vacuum line and let it choke out. Restarted it and dumped a bunch of smoke. I put the other half of the pint into the engine oil. The lifters quieted way down and it was running smoother already. The idle was low so I set turned up the curbside idle and it was running pretty good. Then I brought it over to my hotrodder neighbors and set the timing to 6* advanced. I gotta tell you, doing that old school timing with the light was so cool. So simple! He helped me find two vacuum leaks and locate a fuel leak.

Day 4: Took the truck down to discount tire and had them look at the old setup. Looks like bias ply tires from the 80's and original widowmaker rims. Got a new setup ordered.

Day 5. Been having an issue with the front right drum brake scraping and the high beam footswitch was shorted out. ALso researched the holley carb and found it was the diaphragm on the accelerator pump that was leaking. Hit the parts store for a few items.

Day 7: Installed the new footswitch and it fixed my issue. Awesome, no wire tracing on that job. I took the carb off and swapped the diaphragm and reinstalled the carb. The truck was running smooth already, but was hard to start. It now fires right up without issue and settles into a nice healthy idle. :D Did I mention how much fun I am having working on this thing?

Next-up- I have read about everything on drum brake overhaul. Trying to decide if I can get away with just disassembling them and putting new wheel cylinders in the front drums. I have them, but not sure if I am going to get new shoes and springs to.

Day 9: I pulled the bench seat out today to drop off for restoration. It needed a lot of work. Vacuumed and steamed the original carpet. Good to go. Also pulled the armrests which were in rough shape. Pretty laid back day. My assistant was present and working hard.

Thank you! He makes things fun even if he slows me down.

Day 10: Dropped the seat off for upholstery repair today after work. Not much time tonight, so I just took apart the driver door panel to see what parts I need to order. The inner latch release wasn't working. Turns out it was just unseated. The lock know is missing, but the push/pull wire was laying down in there. Loks like I only need the little lock knob and a new plastic ring sleeve. Cleaned all the chrome stuff with mothers. Need to order a new plastic latch cup and clean up the vinyl. I don't care for the repop door panels, so I'm going to try just cleaning up the old ones. Maybe redo the chrome/shiny piping with a little metallic paint.

Day 13: Got the seat back at 5pm, and sprinted back home to install it and get the truck down to discount tire to have the new wheels mounted. Made it just before closing time. The seat turned out well even though I did not order the exact factory look materials from SMS. I selected from the vinyl books at the interior shop. I'm happy with the color combo though. The wheels and tires turned out great! I got a great one day deal on the rims from 4wheelparts and had my guy at discount order them direct and install some 245/75/R16 Michelin LTX M/S2's on them. The wheels are Procomp 1069's in 16x8. Offset came out just right! I also placed an order for new armrests, couple of door parts, and some horn parts. Should have that all in middle of next week. May pull the dash this weekend and take it to the same guy to have it fixed and wrapped in the same porcelain as the seat.

Any idea if someone would be interested in the stock widowmaker wheels? I am keeping the hubcaps, but not certain if its worthwhile to keep the old wheels and tires. I'm in the suburbs, so storage is limited.

Here is a shot of the seat. Will take something better once the sun goes behind the house.

Like those rims a lot! I'm running stock style 16" on my F250, after replacing the 16.5s it had on it. Sure do like the look of the aluminum wheels.

Seat came out real nice as well.

Thanks, mcheath. Keep an eye on 4wheelparts.com. I got the set of wheels for $390.

I took the truck on date night Saturday to a birthday party. 60 miles round trip! She is definitely a driver. Helped a buddy fix a leaky jeep transmission on Sunday, made a few runs to auto zone with him. A scene from Dukes of Hazzard broke out in the parking lot.

Ended up doing a full mobil-1 synthetic oil change with a Motorcraft filter. I just didn't have a good feeling about the P.O's maintenance. Also adjusted my rear bumper. It wasn't level. After not seeing any way to adjust it along the axis across the back. I took a block of wood and a sledge hammer and persuaded it. Got it close enough not to be an eyesore.
