F250 Camper Special - Driving Project

Post by marvin2 »

Things have been really busy for me lately....in a good way. Our son, Jackson Ford was born in early August. Needless to say, priorities have changed and I haven't had much time in the garage to work on my 70 shortbed project. I began to realize how long the restoration was going to take, so I started looking for a truck that I could drive and work on at the same time.

I found this 70 F250 Camper Special for sale locally...and brought it home for $800!!!

I am shocked with how little rust this truck has; turns out its a California truck. The original 390 was replaced with a later model 5.0 roller motor at some point.

I have tons of spare parts sitting around that will be making their way to this truck soon, but overall, the plan involves elbow grease and gasoline.

Going to change out the original split ring wheels with new single piece wheels with radial tires. Bought a set from a late model Ram 2500. We'll see if I need to run spacers when I try to mount them this weekend.

Cool truck. Congrats on the little one. I know just how you feel with the projects on hold once you have little ones running around

dang thats a great looking truck for 800! hate to compare it to my $800 truck but can't help myself, i guess.

the patina on that is so cool, i hope you don't paint it. maybe clear and a spray on bedliner, leave the rustic look.

Spent some time on it this weekend. Got the wheels installed...they fit perfect, no scrubbing! Came from an '05 Dodge 2500; 17x7.5 wheels; 245/70/17 tires.

Put some time in this weekend working on the truck again.

Trying to diagnose a brake light / turn signal issue. The tail lights are working and the passenger turn signal works, but the driver turn signal and both brake lights do not work. I replaced the bulbs and the brake switch, but no luck. I think next step will be to replace the turn signal switch and flasher relay to see if that does the trick.

Also working through a vibration problem from installing the new wheels (posted in the suspension section). I think this is a matter of my lug nuts seating too far in the lug openings on the wheels. Hopefully have this taken care of soon too.

For some positive work though, I started welding on the truck some. I'm replacing the mirrors and found 6 approx. dime size holes in the door from previous mirror setups. There were about 18 (not kidding) holes in the bed rail and side down the passenger side as well. Got them all welded up. I will have to do the same down the driver's side too. I'll have to clean it all up with a little bit of body filler.

All the holes in the truck must be a California thing. I have a 68 Cs from California and it too has a ton of drilled holes on the doors and bed rails.

Hey yer gonna hurt my feelings, seeing as how I'm in Calif and all.

You are correct though, my truck had a zillion holes on the bed rails for who knows what, as well as multiple mirror changes on the doors and so holes for that as well.

And the trucks I see in my local Pick-A-Part are also pretty much all afflicted with the same thing. Also, we seem to have loved to put cargo tie downs on the upper outsides of the bed, it's rare to see an older pickup without some version of them. I can even do a pretty good guess as to when they were installed given what type they are, as the stores sold different versions at different times.

My dad would get a new truck and the first thing he did was install the tie downs, then usually some bed rails of some sort, then campers came and went and so more holes there, as well as tool boxes and shazam, swiss cheese.

You don't see that so much now a days.

Nice truck. Great buy for 800, why that engine alone makes it worth more than that. It's also good to know that Dodge wheels fit.

I hope to give an update on the dodge wheels soon. The fit with the correct lug pattern, I'm just concerned that the difference in lug size between our Fords and the newer Dodges is allowing for vibration in the wheel and loosening of the lug nuts. I haven't driven since I changed the last remaining lug nuts, so we'll see if there is any improvements.

The bedside holes were definitely from some combination of bed rails and exterior bed tie downs. No way would I have the guts to drill like that into a new truck!

I got the bumper swapped out today. The original bumper was just too big for my liking:

Good decision. I had the same bumper on my truck and I'm putting a sport bumper back on it too. I think it's a much cleaner look and will adapt better to a receiver hitch.

Couple of packages arrived recently....I'll be installing West Coast Jr. mirrors as well as bumper guards. The mirrors are old Sears mirrors; I would like to know the year, but I cannot find it noted anywhere. Got a set of cab lights ordered today as well...

Dont know if this helps with the date of the mirrors or not. I just got the same set of mirrors this weekend off of a 1978 Ford van. If the mirrors dont have the gasket that goes under the mounting bravket between bracket and door get a piece of rubber sheeting from the hardware store and make some. It keeps down any rattle and keeps water out of your door.
