Re: 1970 F100 Project
Nothing crazy here...just finished up the framework for the fuel tank. I plan on using self-tapping screws to secure the tank to the frame. Then, I'm drilling 3 through-holes on each side and tacking some cage nuts to the top to secure it to the frame rails.

Re: 1970 F100 Project
I finally got around to the other cab corner...both corners were full of sand blasting sand which caused premature rust. Look carefully and you can see it pouring out the rust holes after I tapped it with a hammer. I was much more patient with the left side. Should take next to ZERO filler.

Re: 1970 F100 Project
Thanks Randy! I just have the antenna delete to do and then it's time for a little filler and LOTS of sanding...
Oh, I keep forgetting...I'm going to delete the stake pockets in the bed too.

Looking good!
Can you get a pic of the front of the tank and a measurement from the front of the tank to the crossmember. I've got a feeling the IRS subframe is going to be in the way..

Thank you! I'll try to get a pic tonight but I can already tell you that the measurement is 0". I placed it as far forward as I could.SATURN5 wrote:Looking good!

Re: 1970 F100 Project
Love your truck and your work on it so far. I'm in the process of gathering parts for mine now. When you buy the mustang fuel tank do you go with the kit with the new sending unit and filler parts or are you using left over parts from the pickups original system?

Re: 1970 F100 Project
Thanks! You can buy the kit that comes with the sending unit, o-ring, and lock ring for about $150 and up. I bought my tank by itself for $107 w/ free shipping. I've read from several sources that the Spectre brand is the best and they're made in Canada. As far as I know, all others are made overseas. I assume that they are of lower quality and/or thinner gauge metal but I don't know for sure.damn_fool wrote:Love your truck and your work on it so far. I then bought my stainless sending unit for around $35 w/ free shipping. It came with the o-ring and lock ring.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/69-Mustang-Gas- ... 54&vxp=mtr
The Mustang sending unit has the same resistance as our trucks so it will work with an original gauge. I bought aftermarket gauges but I stuck with the early Ford resistance so I could use the Mustang sending unit (72-10 ohms if I remember correctly). Classic Instruments offers fuel gauges for all makes and years as do several other gauge manufacturers.
As far as the rest of the system, I bought a preformed fuel line set for a '70 F100 (3 pieces) which came with the hard line for the in-cab tank that goes through the cab floor to the frame and the hard line that runs from that point up through the small boxed-in portion and ends in the area of the fuel pump. The 3rd piece is the hard line that runs from the fuel pump to the carb. Obviously, I won't be using the in-cab portion so I'll end up flaring the piece in the frame and connecting it to more hard line that will run on back to an electric pump and filters (pre-pump & post-pump) near the tank.

Re: 1970 F100 Project
I built up another dolly for the cab this last weekend and got it in place to continue the last of the metal work, bodywork, and hopefully get it and the doors primed and painted very soon. I have rebuild kits for the door hinges as well as all new rubber EVERYTHING for the cab, doors, and the rest of the interior. I want to get it sealed up and all the glass back in and mounted back to the frame for good by the time the cold weather hits.
