69 F100 2WD SWB Lets Make This Thing Road Worthy

Post by [Anonymous] »

Alright guys, I searched and found this old truck on the Craigslist. I had been contemplating buying an old truck for a while and finally decided to pull the trigger. I wanted a truck like we had built for my uncle back when I was a teenager and used to work for my father at his shop.

This old truck, although it looks real good in pictures http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... 54#p649954, has a LOT of cancer. At this point, I just want to make the truck road worthy so that I can insure, title and license it. I plan to be working on this truck for quite some time before I have everything done to my satisfaction.

The old truck had some really rotten gas in it when I got it, so the first order was to get that cleaned out. I removed the fuel line from the fuel pump and just let the remaining gas siphon into my catch pan. I removed the gas tank and got to cleaning it up. I used the old gas to help swirl around and flush out the old tarred up gas and rust from the tank. I was amazed that I got two 32oz cups full of this tarred up matter. I removed the fuel sender and found that the float rod had rusted in two and it was nothing more than a cap at this point. I used a gallon of Acetone that I swirled around a couple of times then let soak over night as my final step. It is not perfect, but it is much better than it was. I ordered from NPD, a new sender, filler coupler hose and filler grommet for re-installation.

This truck has so many wire nuts on it, I swear I think that a previous owner thought it was using A/C. I have been going through and removing all added on miscellaneous wiring. Trying to get it back to the way it should be. I will have to solder and heat shrink quite a few places that someone has cut apart to tap something else in. I already did this at the horn relay where I think someone tried to tap in to add a different horn.

Did these trucks have a fuse holder by the battery box under the fuse relay?

After a little searching and a quick investigation out in the garage, it appears there are supposed to be two fuse holders each with a 4 amp fuse and these are for the ammeter. It looks like someone has wrapped all my harness connectors in tape and also tapped up the other fuse holder.

Just more stuff to clean up...

It's amazing, and frustrating, sometimes to see what the PO's have done to the trucks before we get 'em, ain't it? Keep us posted on your progress.
