1968 F250 4x4 (AKA-Rusty)

Post by salisbury68f250 »

Hey guys I am new to the site, I really like what I have seen so far! Lots of info and project trucks. My first vehicle was a 1969 F100 long bed. Had a 360cid 2bbl engine and 3 on the tree. Got the truck for $700 in 2002 when I was 16. Never had it on the road the 4yrs I owned it, long story short I had to sell it cause I owed my mother money. Found a 1968 F250 4x4 on craigslist 3hrs away. I had been looking for an 67-72 F250 4x4 for a couple years, funds had always been tight so it never worked out even when I did happen to find one. The guy said it had a good deal of rust. I had money and figured what would it hurt to ride out there and check it out. I was excited and nervous at the same time. When we pulled in I saw it sitting there with a bed full of wheels and tires, it was primer black. I can tell you when that guy said it had a good deal of rust he was not kidding! Someone had filled the hood, fenders, bed panels, and doors with some kind of foam which helped accelerate the rust. The hood was destroyed and the bed was in terrible condition as well. I looked it over and hopped inside and bumped the key, to my surprise it fired right up. Took it for a drive to find that the power assist steering was hardly working and the brakes were hardly there. I was losing hope fast, I was fighting with myself to buy it or not. I couldn't walk away from her, I saw the potential to bring her back. Needless to say I bought her and brought her home on a rollback. Its going to be a long road to fix it up, but it will be worth it in the end. I got to getting a closer look at the truck to find it originally had a 300 straight six but now had a 360 or 390 in it (haven't determined which yet). It is also a manual with granny gear, someone also swapped in a np205 transfer case. I will try to get pictures up soon and will keep you guys updated on the slow progress of this truck.

Welcome to the wonderful world of money pits! It has been said that a boat is a hole in the water that you throw money into! Our trucks seem to be like land locked boats.
If you put your location in your signature (go to your user control panel) someone close by may have (or know of) some good body panels you could get. Kind of sounds like you basically need all new sheet metal.
First, though, fix those brakes!

Well there she is, got a lot of work ahead of me. The wiring harness is a disaster as well, all lights work except turn signals but the gauge cluster doesn't work. I would like to get another wiring harness but those a few and far between and hard to find in good condition. The power assist steering hydraulic ram leaks like crazy which I am sure that is very common. Nice things about the truck are the power brakes with the big discs up front and the HD drums in the rear ( I believe it has the drums with the 2 1/2" wide shoes cause they are huge, but have to pull apart and measure).
