460 motor swap with headers

Post by 69fordfan »

howdy! does anyone have any info on a mototor swap for a 78 f 250- 400 to a 460 with headers? im sure its been done a thousand times and even comes factory with the 460, but im looking for any info on the swap and what i might need to look for or problems i might encounter. the truck has factory ac. my plan is to put a 460 in place of the 400 and run fender exit headers. the reason i want the fender exit is it has dual tanks. one inside the frame from mid cab back on the drivers side, and the rear tank is centered between the frame rails at the rear of the frame. for cosmetics and ease of running a true dual exhaust, i want to run fender exit headers to simplify the installation/running of the exhaust pipe around the fuel tank and transfer case. my thoughts are fender exit headers and dump the exhaust in front of the rear wheels. my concerns are the clearance issues with different brands/styles of headers and clearance issues with shock towers, steering shaft, ac box, starter, brake lines etc.... if anyone has done this swap i would appreciate any info/advice they could give me. im getting too old to figure it out on my own! thanks :help:

Try these guys they're expensive. but I think they have a good header.
I put a used set on my old mud truck and ran them for over ten years.
They were still good when I sold it.

Check Autofab also. I'm running their FE mounts. I like them.

Seen a lot of garbage with the L&L name on it. Autofab stuff looks nice, but never used it.

460's NEVER came in a 4x4 before 1980.

Yeah the pictures of some of their accessory mount look pretty cobbled.
In the 90's I acquired a truck with the motor mounts and headers, they lasted 10 plus years with me and were still ok when I sold the truck.

I don't know why Ford only put 460's in 2wd pre 80. :hmm:

First hand l&l engine mounts sucked, I ripped one out every year. But on the plus side their headers are some of the best out there. Also purchased an alternater relocation kit, good stuff. Like stated above Autofab has some quality engine mounts and worth the coin. I had him build his first set of 460 mounts for a highboy, then later bought some for my 77.5. Both were of the same great quality. Only problem I really ran into was I had to run the stock low profile valve covers cuz the ac box on the pass side and booster on the other were too snug to run the larger cast aluminum covers.Image the relocation kit was on my 70, this is a march dual serpentine kit.

All you need for your truck is the block mounts. I bought mine from advance adapters.
Get your headers from.l&l though. Block mounts and an oil pan from a 4x4 with a.460 and your in business.
Contact me at 720-244/6131 if you have? 'S. Thanks, Beau
