THANKS!!! Well, part of the sales pitch for getting the '70 was that I said I would sell the '69 as a work in progress or part it out. It's not going to be worth much by the time I take everything good from it. In all honesty, I'd like to keep it and have a project for my soon to be one-year-old son and I to build. I'd like a CV IFS, a 4-bar coil-over rear, a 300ci 6 perhaps with EFI backed with an AOD or a late model modular motor. Once he can turn a few wrenches and if he shows interest, we could start on it together and take our time with it and he could drive it in high school and both of us could go to car shows with 'em.

Re: 1970 F100 Project Gauge Panel

Post by F100builder »

I've started my 10 days off in a row! I hope to get some good work done on the '70 with much of my time off. I'm settled on the gauges I want to use and I plan on making an engine turned panel to fit into an original steel gauge bezel. They're called 'All American' from Classic Instruments and they are quite fitting for the look I want for this build. Check 'em out...

Image

Not sure if I could do the spiraling effect but I want to engine turn a panel cut from aluminum to look similar to this guitar...

I'm shooting for a classy retro hot rod look if that makes sense to anyone. With the boxwood green paint, an argent or creme painted '67 grille, I think it will look somewhat stock but with the lowered stance, the polished 5-spokes (17" & 18"), and the rumbling exhaust note will scream hot rod truck. I also want to eventually install my ididit tilt column and top it with a Lecarra Mark 40 wheel (a copy of a '40 Ford steering wheel)...

Not much to report today but I did get the disc front with DJM's installed and cut 1 coil from a new set of springs while I was at it. I also stripped 99% of the firewall. Next up is to remove the bed and lay the cab on its back for more of the same to the bottom followed by Rust Bullet, primer, and boxwood green on the bottom and firewall for now.

The UPS man dropped off my '69 Mustang fuel tank as well as the paint today! The new Rebel wiring harness should be here by the end of this week too! :woohoo:

I like how good your frame and suspension look in that last shot. Is that your poor man's creeper in that shot (cardboard)? I have an old piece of paneling that I use. I never heard of "Rebel" wiring. Are their prices pretty reasonable?

It looks like Rebel has some decent prices. I'm looking at a complete re-wire too. I've been spending spare evening time on making new complete wiring diagrams for mine. What kit did you get?

Thanks! Yeah, that's my creeper for now. The truck is parked in my side yard behind my 6ft cedar fence (HOA laws). I like doing this dirty work outside actually...it saves me from having to sweep all the dust up.

I have an EZ kit in my '69 which works just fine but I decided on the Rebel kit this time as it has flasher sockets built into the panel rather than just hanging loose on the wires with the EZ. I did manage to use a factory clamp for one of the flashers in my '69 but I like the looks of this Rebel kit. Plus, the harness and its components are made in USA. I researched and searched several sites and found the 21 circuit kit averaging about $220. I found one on ebay for $219.99 and $10.50 flat shipping. The EZ 21 circuit kit runs about $165 for the mini-fuse style and $185 for the standard sized kit. So, I paid $35-$55 more for the Rebel but I think it's a better quality kit made here.

I like starting fresh with new wiring on a full resto. It's much easier than splicing, hacking, and messing with 40+ year old wiring! I ended up getting the 21 circuit kit (see previous response).

I would love a close up of the fuse block when you get it. Also a wire. I'm curious if they labeled the wire every 6" with a circuit number, or if they labeled them by name.... Fan, A/C, Pwr Windows etc. Same with the fuse block. Numbers or names? Also, how are the wires connected to the block? I know, a lot of detailed questions. It will help me decide if I use a prefab kit, or simply design/build the whole system. Thanks in advance if you can accommodate!

I'll keep watching your build-keep us posted on the wiring harness. If it's good quality, I'd pay a little extra to keep my fellow Americans working any day.

All I know about this kit is what I've seen here...

...and wouldn't you know it. I just found it for $20 cheaper (didn't find out shipping from here though).
