1968 f250 highboy

Post by koch68 »

i might as well start a project thread to keep track of things. its going to be slow process build as money is sort of tight. as of right now the truck is stock except for power steering swap and disc brake front end. also had a newer seat out of late model ford. my truck was bought when i was 15 and i have done little things to it. i drove it for a while after i got my licence and then one rainy day a honda car decided to stop in front of me and i we hit. luckily no one got hurt. i totaled the honda and slid into oncoming traffic and hit another truck barely denting it. all this resulted in the stock dana 44 snaping right in half at the pumpkin. so this time was better then ever to do powersteering and a disc brake front end. luckily i got a free front clip off a 1978 f250 for free as my cuzin works at the local scrap yard. so this truck has been through a lot and its held up great. no body damage to my truck except for a bent fender where the tire pushed it up. and bent the aluminum wheel. now im on to bigger a better things with it. i picked up a cummins motor complete for $430 that needs rebuilt. tore it down and sure enough the walls are pretty scared up. wait for some money saved up to finish rebuild also bought a spicer 5 speed tranny with adapter plate and clutch for $400. and about to do a superduty spring swap in the front. i have the leafs which i got for $15 from a buddy. on to the pictures.

here it is after i got into the wreck

Thanks guys. Funny thing is the headlight door got a little dent from the wreck weird. And I wont ever be selling it. Also the front is swapped again it. Is 2 inches wider then the high pinion I had and I had to weld on shock mounts and spring pads. I want to find a design to fabricate better shock mounts but the driver side on has a goofy steering arm that is u shaped and it hits my shock if its to short. Im stuck

Mind getting a picture of your steering set up now? Sounds like you have the Factory HP44 set up so you might have the same set up as me. Ill snag a picture of mine in the morning for you

That steering arm is not right.... It's either severely bent bent or you have a GM/Dodge arm on there maybe???

The GM and Dodge 44 arms are totally different from Ford 44 arms.

That's a disc brake open knuckle axle, it has the extended factory lower shock mount already on it, there's no reason you should have to weld crap on the axle to make the shock fit. Kind of too bad you didn't post pictures earlier.

Do you have another 76-79 Ford 44 arm? If not I'll dig through my old crap. I've junked out a bunch of those axles for parts and have a bunch of everything but the housings piled somewhere.

So I got this axle with no spring pads and no shock mounts and I don't know what that arm is off. I was thinking it was out of a van with coil springs and it was cut off. Its 1 inch wider on each side. I will get the tag off it and show you. I would love to fix that steering. And buildnicer shock mounts.

I see that now. That axle is a 1/2 ton coil spring 44 housing with spring perches welded on. The driver's side axle tube looks a couple inches longer than 76-79 axle should be.
