Also, in the 2wd variety, those transmission only cost about $100. Whatever you do, BE SURE to install a quality, brand new, clutch slave cylinder. They are prone to fail, and super cheap, so you might as well start out with a good unit to begin with.

Sorry I didn't see this thread sooner. I run the 4.02 1st geared T19 with 3.00 ring and pinion gears with 265/70R16 tires and it is awesome!!! Engine is a 428 and it has been holding up for 3+ years of brutal hot rodding with no problem whatsoever. My brother has a similar setup with a T19 with the 5.11 gear ratio and it doesn't quite work out. 1st gear is too short and you are better off still starting in 2nd gear. The T19 swap is the first thing I would recommend to anybody that- 1. doesn't tow much or at all- 2. wants to lower cruising rpm on the freeways- 3. wants to pick up a bit of speed from the advantage of having a better spaced gearing setup. The other nice thing is that if you are starting with a np435 of T18 tranny then the swap is simply bolt in with no modifications needed on the driveline, tranny mount, speedo cable, nothing! I love the setup I currently have and wish I would have figured it out 10 years ago when I got the truck. The only other route I would take if $$$ wasn't a factor would be a 5 or 6 speed. But as far as inexpensive and easy upgrades, this is my absolute top pick! Any questions feel free to ask. Good luck!
I have a T19 with the 5.11 first gear behind a 390. With 3.00:1 rear gears, first was definitely a fleeting experience. I just got a deal on a 2.75:1 rear end gear installation, and it helped quite a bit. First and second gears are much more usable. Highway cruising in 4th is much quieter.
I have been reading everyone's posts on the T19. I have experience with the T18 & NP435 but was not aware of the non-granny gear T19. I have done rear end gear swaps on my 1967 with a 240 engine and learned my lesson that tall gears need horsepower to be effective. That 240 came factory with 3.70 gears because that's what matched it best in terms of driveability. Now from that experience and what I have read here I am working on a 390 engine with a factory 4 barrel Holley carb. After doing a little math, the 4.0 1st gear T19 with a 2.75 (or even a 3.00) axle seems like it would be a great match for that engine. It is an easy swap and has the benefits of an actual overdrive. The extra bonus is that the T19 should easily handle any power that the 390 can dish out. What I am learning from you guys and my own experience is that the secret to doing a rear end ratio change is matching the up the correct engine, transmission, with the axle ratio. Am I right?

I have a T18 in my 68 with a 360 and 3.25 in the rear end. Granny is awsome and at 60 mph its only turning around 2000 rpms. It also gets 13 mpgs. I dont know if this helps but thought id put my in
