69 F100 - Junkyard Turbo Engine - Video
Why?
I value uniqueness and practicality in a truck, which may not totally explain why I'm doing what I'm doing, but beyond that I'll just say I'm doing it because I can
The Project Basics:
Pull the 390/C6 out of the 69
Pull a 300 out of an 89
Clean up and re-seal the 300
Mate the 300 with a load of parts I have laying around (and a few new ones), including a turbocharger
Install the 300 in the 69
The Kicker:
My wife has Thanksgiving week off work and has kindly agreed to drive me around, since the 69 is my daily driver. She will help me out if I don't get everything done this week, but she won't be happy about it. I'd better get it done
Disclaimer:
I titled this post with the word "junkyard", however the only piece I've acutally gotten from the junkyard is the transmission. "Junkyard" just seemed to catch the spirit of project better than anything else I could think of at the moment.

Re: 69 F100 - Junkyard Engine Swap (with turbo :)
Ok, so here are some pics of the truck, I started this project on Sat. (the 17th) by pulling out the existing 390 and C6
The truck itself is fairly straight, but was next to a building that burned down. So far I've scraped a bunch of melted plastic off of everything, cleaned and primared around the windshield, and the hood, I've replaced the windshield and swapped a driver's door onto it (the old one didn't have a window in it anymore due to the heat). I've also replaced the taillights and instrument cluster, both of which were melted badly. Most recently (besides this project), I replaced the front wheel bearings and installed new front wheels (waiting for tires before doing the back).

Re: 69 F100 - Junkyard Engine Swap (with turbo :)
Sunday was church and family day, so no progress there other than some late night project planning and parts ordering (50 lb/hr injectors and mandrel bent tubing).
Monday I pulled the 300 out of the 89, took a bunch of it apart and started cleaning it up.

Today, I finished cleaning the 300 and painted it, hopefully we'll get to the good stuff soon Oh, I also fixed a few customer cars too.

More cleaning and painting today, re-sealed the engine too. I lucked out with this engine, its nice and clean inside! Given the truck it came out of that was a suprise. My welder blew a diode a few days back, so I had to spend some time fixing it today too. All in all some good progress, but not where I hoped to be.
While I had the front apart I decided to replace the timing gears
Here is where I am at now, looking better

The next steps should be welding together turbo piping and mounting. I'm planning to place the turbo somewhere close to this position:

Re: 69 F100 - Junkyard Engine Swap (with turbo :)
Thanks for the compliments!
Got a little time on it this morning before all the family arrived for Thanksgiving. Since it is Thanksgiving, I thank God for CNC milling machines
Turbo Explanation:
So I had the turbo already, it was for another project I started back in 03. Its a T3/T40E, which is great for a largish 4 cylinder, but its going to be undersized for this engine. By my calculations it'll spool very quick and run out of breath around 4000 RPM. Since the internals of this 300 are all stock I'm good with that. I don't think the torque peak or hp peak RPMs will change much at all, so that puts them in a fairly efficient part of the compressor map. I think the biggest challeng will be running a large enough wastegate to prevent boost creep, and extreme exhaust backpressure. Bottom line, there are definately better turbo's out there for this application, but since I've already got this one its going on there for now.
Anyway, besides milling the turbo exhaust flange, I installed the 50lb injectors in the manifold and got about 1/2 the welding done on the pre-turbo exhaust tubing. I also realized I was in too big a hurry to get the oil pan on last night and forgot to drill it for the turbo oil return, oops

Re: 69 F100 - Junkyard Engine Swap (with turbo :)
I have an old megasquirt I built several years ago (and ran for several years) on a different car. Its just sitting around collecting dust right now, might as well use it. The built in map sensor is good for 2.5 bar (21.8 psi), which is much more than this turbo setup will be putting out. I have a background in electronics (also built the cnc mill), so sometime I'd like to build a more recent version of megasquirt or even something from diyefi. I've done a fair bit of design work for my own computer, but just don't have time now with owning my own business.

Re: 69 F100 - Junkyard Engine Swap (with turbo :)
sweet! im been waiting on someone to use megasquirt on this site. One day i hope to fuel inject my 302, but right now i dont have the funds. plus, im not real familiar with computers stuff. that mostly why the megasquirt stuff seems so cool to me. If you ever get time after your done with the build do a write up over the wiring, tuning and all that jazz. this is an awesome build! keep the pics coming!

here is a pic of my buddys 1950 IH Cub. hes using a ebay turbo, his own home made throttle body, and manifold, and a megasquirt 2 computer. I figured you might enjoy seeing it.
