Re: 71 F100 4x4 SB is getting shiny and motor getting healthy!
Sorry for the crappy video, the camera kept adjusting volume, especially at the 30 second point LOL
It does have some lope, even with a 445 FE with a relatively mild 270H on 110 ICL, and quite a bit of snap. I'll try to get it on the road next weekend and see how it does
I will say this, after the EFI stroker in the Mustang, this is one cold blooded bitch LOL Don't be surprised if you see an EFI write up this summer. I am spoiled!
Here are the specs:
- 4.25 stroke. SCAT cast crank and I beam rods, internally balanced
- 4.08 Probe 17cc pistons
- 10.160 deck height
- 9.98:1 (right on the edge for the cam I am running)
- 270H, on 110 ICL instead of 106
- Stock hyd rockers with good pushrods and Doug Garifo end stands with stock tins
- D2TE-AA heads, heavily port by Les Schmader, med riser intake dimensions + 1247 gasket match, un-shrouded chamber, 2.09/1.67 undercut valves. Flowed 277 intake, 186 exhaust. (These truck heads flow about 218 intake from the factory)
- RPM intake, ported by Scott Johnston at RHP, opened to med riser gasket, plenum and roof mods built for my 489 when it was carb'd
- 3310 Holley 750, w/ 1 inch phenolic cloverleaf open spacer (Going to try a 1000 HP vac sec and an 850 DP once the truck is on the road)
- Hedman headers into mandrel bent 3 inch duals, 50 series Flowmasters (mufflers will probably change, had them on the shelf)
- Stock 1975 Duraspark w/ recurve
71 F-100 SB 4x4, 461 FE, Edelbrock Pro-flo 4, 4 speed, 4 inch softride lift, all poly bushings, integral PS, most mods installed since the 80's

Re: 71 F100 4x4 SB is getting shiny and motor getting healthy!
Been busy at work and the Superduty decided it wanted some attention
Wife's birthday this weekend
Doing a 2400 mile round trip following that
Then daughter's birthday
It looks like I wont be road testing until Christmas break, certainly in no hurry, but driving the truck with approx 150 hp more than the last build has me pretty excited to get it out there!

Re: 71 F100 4x4 SB is getting shiny and motor getting healthy!
Slowly getting things done, unfortunately I have a ruptured bicep and a separated shoulder slowing me down a bit, but I got the door hinges rebuilt, hung two doors and one fender. Should have the other fender and the door hardware together tomorrow!

What did you do to rebuild the door hinges? Mine could probably use it too. She's looking real good!

Here's a really good article on how to do it:sargentrs wrote:What did you do to rebuild the door hinges? Mine could probably use it too. She's looking real good!

You can get the bushings and pins from LMC. That's where I got mine. (I need to get started on that.)

Slowly getting it back together, tore my bicep over Christmas and dislocated a shoulder. Picked up a Snop-on top box full of tools, 20 yrs ago wouldnt be an issue, at 44 yrs old I destroy my shoulder, go figure

Havent decided how I am going to paint the background on the tailgate insert

Re: 71 F100 4x4 SB is getting shiny and motor getting healthy!
Today I got the grille together after painting all the small parts, although after this pic I think I will shift the hood over to the drivers side just a smidge
New bumper is on its way, and the baby west coast mirrors are disassembled, going to reassemble with all new stainless hardware.
After that its just the rain gutter moulding, the "Heavy Duty Special" badging, FORD on the hood, and put some miles on it.

Re: 71 F100 4x4 SB is getting shiny and motor getting healthy!
Been a while, took a trip to Disney, combined with normal workaholic status and a recent attraction to learning golf
Got back to the truck today though
Most of you probably saw this on the FE forum, but I am pretty happy with it so resharing
Rebuilt the mirrors, takes a steady hand to take apart a mirror with heat to replace all the hardware with stainless. They came out nice though.
Back out to the shop to assemble the driver's side. Coming together pretty nice I think!
After that is some minor interior work, get it on a front end machine and get some miles on it! The 445 sounds REAL good, I am itching to take it on a nice long run

Re: 71 F100 4x4 SB is getting shiny and motor getting healthy!
Well, an update on the 445, made it breathe a little deeper
The build is a 10:1 445 FE, with ported D2TE-AA truck heads flowing about 280 cfm, CJ undercut stem valves, ported RPM intake, 3310 Holley, 1 inch spacer, Hedman headers, dual 3 inch mandrel bent exhaust
Originally I put it together with stock hyd 1.73 rockers, with good shafts and Precision Oil Pump's end stands, and a 270H cam retarded to 110 intake centerline to let it live with the 10:1 compression. (270 adv, 224 @ .050, .519 lift, 110 LSA on 110 ICL)
It ran very strong, but I had an odd noise after a while, turned out to be a cracked lifter, something I hadn't seen happen before. Basically the cam was fine, but the lifter had a crack which was bleeding oil and making it clack and the oddest times.
So, I could have added a lifter and drove off, but I had it all apart and decided to go with more cam, and I have always loved solids on an FE.
I went with a custom solid flat tappet tight lash Bullet cam, 282 adv, 236 @ .050, .580 lift, 112 LSA on a 104 centerline. The logic was to add some lift and duration, but have a very similar intake closing point as the hyd cam to manage dynamic compression, then spread the centers to keep overlap in check. At the same time I changed to Erson roller rockers, 1.76 ratio with needle bearing fulcrum
I expected some change but not much, the dyno programs said gains everywhere, but they typically are all over the place. However it worked out great
Trying to get a video, but the exhaust tone sort of drowns out my cell phone. The bottom line though is it feels like it revs looser and quicker, and despite a larger cam, it pulls harder everywhere, even in 4th at idle and will bang 6000 rpm in a heartbeat
So, success! The truck is probably a little to fast for its drum brakes and big heavy tires now so next step is probably a set of good disks up front.
Movie to come soon
