Is 20w-50 ok to run in a dana 24 tcase?

They have more than their share of problems as it is. Sure it's a great idea to run one on 20wt oil?

Nope, and now that I think about it, it's a terrible idea.
I was thinking more on the 50wt part of the oil, but the t-case won't be getting hot like an engine does...

How about SAE 50? That's what I was looking for but no auto parts store nearby carries it. I can see why though.

What should I run? 75w90 seems a little thick??

Don't quote me on this but I thought it was sae50 that was called for. I could be wrong.

Do NOT use gear oil (75W-90 etc.) in the transfer case, or transmission, (for those still running original 4 speeds). Yes SAE-50 is what is called for, but unfortunately has gone the way of the Studebaker for the most part, and would probably have to be special ordered if found at all. Good news is, 20W-50 is a safe modern substitute to running straight 50 weight motor oil, and gives you a little more all weather adaptability as well, no need to change to a lighter 40 or 30 weight in the cold of winter (as recommended by Ford). Synthetic versions makes it all that much better and will do a better job of lubricating, yielding longer wear and some times even a small gain in MPG's. I've personally been running a synthetic 20W-50 in both transmission and transfer case with no issues to report, and is very nice on those cold mornings everything works as if it were warmer out, no stiffness or sluggish shifting. Save the 75W-90 for your front and rear axles (synthetic gear oil works great as well, and as it lessens friction, it allows more power to reach the ground). Good luck and happy wheeling!

I just picked up 8 qts of Valvoline SAE 50....

It is out there. I went to Car Quest.
