C4 Help

Post by FordTruck »

Hey guys i just bought a new 70 F100 project/daily driver. Its a 302/C4 but every once and awhile it'll make a noise like a squeal with a slight grind it olny lasts maby a second and seems todo it when i gas it kinda hard while turning. I drove the truck home almost 80 miles and it olny did it twice once when iwas turning around or gassed it from a dead stop round a curve. The fluid looks fine, clean and is olny a drop or two at most low and the truck shifts out fine through every gear. Any help/ideas on whats goin on?

Doesn't sound like a transmission problem to me. I would look at your front wheel bearings first on the side which is outside on a turn.

( a steep hill and it shifted outta first made the noise then went right into second and I drove the truck around and its still shifting a ok.)

Does this happen during the 1 / 2 shift ? Can you relate it to the shift into 2nd gear....Do the wheels have to be turned for this to happen ? Or does it happen on a straight drive away start? Wheels straight ahead?.......

Dry u-joints can also make a similar sound.

It seems to only happen when the wheels are turned to the right. I took it out on another drive this evening and I went out and it shifted manually 1,2,D no problem and I punched it on both flat and hills with no noise. Til I made the right turn and started climbing the hill it made the noise and got bout half way up and tapped the brakes to make a left into my parking spot no noise but the brakes got super squishie and the front chamber was bone dry...could this have something todo with the noise?

Bobbyford- The u-joints are on tomorrows check list cause I got a clunk when I drop it and gear.

I've never had anything like this with a C4, but my AOD I did from a swap does this. So It could be possible, but I would definitely check other things especially those ujoints and the diff. Possibly the power steering pump? I had one that sounded just like that.
