Ford V-8 in a Jeep OT

Post by Zorm »

I know this is not the Jeep site, I'm on that too. But since I am in the process of rebuilding the engine in my 83 Cherokee (last of the big ones) and since I have a 66 Mustang, and a 71 F-250 camper special, I thought why not make all my old tin Ford powered. :D The Chero currently has a T176 4 speed, somplace I read that I can get a Ford bellhousing that will bolt up to the T176 and then bolt the ford engine to that. What ford bellhousing do I need? Looking at either a 300 or maybe a 351, I know, straight 6 and V-8. Depends if I can find one with everything still attached along with the exhaust manifold or header/s.

thanks for any info

Zorm,
Depends on what you want to do to the vehicle. Do an interenet search for adapter kits and you should be ablet o find several combos that may work for you. I have a 1948 CJ2A with a 1948 Ford Flathead V8 in it, but I had to machine and create my own adapter kit to hook it up to my transmission, but that was due to very few Flathead V8's being used much anymore.

what, if any, manual tranny did a 360 have behind it, or, would the 302 and 351 share the same bell housing bolt pattern, and then, would the 360 have that same bolt pattern?.

If memory serves me right Jeep (AMC) used Chrysler transmissions as far as the bellhousing pattern goes.

Yes, the 302 and 351W and 351C have the same bolt pattern.
And the 302 /351W / 351C are different from the FE, (360/390).
I'm sorry but they rode me bareback with spurs on today at work, or I could find the tech article on it.

Edited correct info on SBF bolt pattern.

My bad, the 351C is the same I guess:

Never owned a 351C. Tutorial says to look for the thermostat housing in the block itself, (289/302/351W thermostat in intake manifold).

AMC used AMC pattern. They did use some torqueflight transmissions.

"How can you tell the difference from the 351W and the 351C?" The 351C has 8 bolts per valve cover, the 351W has 6 bolts per valve cover same as a 302. The 351C has the same bolt arrangement for the fuel pump as the 302/351W. The 351M engine looks alot like the 351C, it has 8 bolts per valve cover too but uses a totally different bellhousing. You can also tell the 351M from the 351C by the fuel pump bolts. On a 351M the bolts are above and below the pump instead of on either side of it. I think the transmission you have is based on the Ford Toploader design (95% sure) so, if that's the case, there's a good chance that it would bolt to any bellhousing that a Toploader would bolt to, the later ones anyway. The length of the input shaft might be different though IDK. You just can't do too much research when you're planning a swap like this! Hope this helps. :)

The early full size Jeeps had the GM TH400 with either the nailhead buick pattern and an adapter to the AMC block or the AMC pattern GM TH400, then they went to the Chrysler TC(torque command) 727(I dont know the difference between the TC or the TF-torqueflight) also with the AMC Bellhousing pattern. For more info on your Cherk...check out IFSJA.org.
I have a Grand Wagoneer and the meanings of JEEP are....

But I LOVE my GW!
I have been seriously thinking of a 5.8 EFI/and np435/205 swap in it. AMC engines cost a LOT!

http://www.jeeptech.com/trans/t176.html the t176 is a ford tyranny that uses the standerd ford trans pattern. 351 in a Cherokee would be awesome, but 300 seems like a lot of work with little gain. This is probably the only time I'll ever say use a mopar over a ford but why not put a 4.0 in the jeep? I'm not sure if all amcs share the same pattern but if they do that a quick and easy way to get a torque monster.
