Re: West Aussie Bump getting a ground up!
so i spent today finishing the interior dismantle and taking stock of the rust work i have ahead. photos below. it would be great if we had the donor trucks around like you boys do in the US, as that would save me a whole lot of work!!!
if the donor cab i am waiting to see tomorrow doesn't come through it's going to be a whole lotta slow work doing that drip rail area and inside.... wish me luck!
oh and it's amazing what you find in these things, 80 cents in change and 2 used syringes.... tucked up under the dash, luckily they had their caps on as i only found them with my hands.....

Re: West Aussie Bump getting a ground up!
so i have begun cutting out the rust in the roofline of the cab with my mate at the helm of the welder and man was it worse than we thought, especially along the front, quite frankly the previous repair work was ****. a mix of bondo, silicone, space invader (expanding foam) and steel. i am tackling this tomorrow, trying to find another cab or donor cab is not an option as there just aren't enough of our model around in my parts.. we have pretty much finished welding up the filler hole for the gas tank on the cab and a piece on the door frame.
below are the progress pics.

Re: West Aussie Bump getting a ground up!
well i have started to tack in the front section of the roof line, i have decided to go without gutters on the front but was going to run the gutters over the door still and then style them down the a pillar. i have since decided that the gutters above the doors have to go as well, as they just interrupt the lines of the truck. also the nose of my bonnet is rusted and dented, i am interested in the dent side bonnet swap but am unsure of the changes required, i can't remember the thread where this has been done so if someone could link it that would be great.
here are some progress shots for the last couple days between rains.
starting to tack in the middle section
all the pieces tacked in
a side shot to see the shape, it needs some gamer and dolly work from the inside but should come up nice!
as soon as i have these bits done i can take the cab off the chassis and do the lower repairs and also get started on the chassis.

Re: West Aussie Bump rust repairs abound!
Here's one showing the basic contour issues. http://ww.fordification.com/forum/viewt ... 7&p=608628 One of the bigger issues is the relocation of the hood latch, I think. The dent's is the reverse of ours with the latch on bottom and the receptacle on top. Got a pic of the issues with your existing hood? I've got a couple of bad spots on mine and I'd like to see what you wind up doing.

Re: West Aussie Bump rust repairs abound!
have any of you guys used http://www.c2cfabrication.com/ for repair panels before? i have emailed them for a quote as it's really hard to find donor trucks over here. just wondering on peoples experiences.
also if i looked at getting the drop i beams from LMC truck and i had as set of stub axles and disc setup would i be able to fit them together? or would i need a set of drop beams from a later model truck to go with the dent side disc setup?

That roofline repair is a son of a gun, I ran into the same problem with my daughters 67 F-100. The compound corners were tough. Especially when your chasing rusty metal to find something good enough to weld to

Re: West Aussie Bump rust repairs abound!
yeah there is a lot of anvil work going on, it's been slow the last couple weeks as i have been busy with college and house work but i had my mate deliver the dolly for the cab the other day so i can take that off the chassis and start cleaning that up this week hopefully.
i'm pretty excited though as i am going to japan this saturday and get to go to the mooneyes there and also the cafe!!!!
might be able ot pick up some little bits to pretty up the truck, and also see some of the vintage jap car museums (diehard datsun fan to the bitter end)

Re: West Aussie Bump rust repairs abound!
so, super long time no see! things have been mega slow on the build front, have been doing long work stints, 4wks away, 1wk home. but today i opened up the engine that came in the truck as my plans for going 5.0l windsor have changed. as it turns out i have a 351 cleveland, so i have decided i will stick with that. now as i have stated before i have really agricultural engine mounts which wont pass our registration process. i have looked on LMC truck and they dont list 351c engine mounts, just 352. is that the same?
btw trip to japan was awesome, went to mooneyes over there and got to meet the CEO, and the great staff there. plus picked up some shiny bits for the truck, just some little things but a nice touch!

The 352 is not the same as the 351. 352-360-390-428 FE's are the same, 351 is a small block. These never came with a 351c, at least in the states anyway. Probably the reason for you "agricultural" mounts.

Re: West Aussie Bump rust repairs abound!
Your thread sucked me in my Aussie friend. I love the no optioned truck. Simplicity at it's best.
For your motor, one thing that immediately hit me when you said you wanted a Windsor and had an unknown Cleveland....why not build a mock Boss 302 or a 'Clevor' 302 or 351? It's a Windsor bottom end topped with the Cleveland heads and either a Boss 302 or aftermarket intake (on a 302W) or an aftermarket intake from Edelbrock for the 351? You get the parts availability and larger crank journals of the Windsor bottom end (and easy cheap mounts), and you keep the flow of the Cleveland heads. You do have to run custom pistons, I am having a flat top Windsor piston fly cut for the valves. I just scored 2V heads, valve covers, Edelbrock intake and truck headers off a 400M at the junkyard for $200 and am going to build a Clevor 351 for my bump.
Cheers Mate. Hope you get a break from work and can do some 'therapy' work on your truck!

I picked up a 71 last year and was also surprised that it had no heater/vents.

Re: West Aussie Bump rust repairs abound!
hey all, i've been away for a while but have made little to no progress due to work and weather. i'm losing the drive for the girl as i'm at the least complete part, she is down to the chassis, money is tight and my mate who was doing the rust repairs has got too much on to do any more. i need some motivation to get something moving to make some achievements rolling on. if you guys had a truck stripped down and were in my position what would you do to keep it ticking slowly?

Re: West Aussie Bump rust repairs abound!
I hit that road block off and on in my project. Money being the biggest hindrance. Over the last few years I've managed to accumulate a decent stockpile of replacement parts at huge savings. Stuff that I knew I was going to need, eventually, and when I found them, ebay, craigslist, here, etc, I snapped them up and put them in my "pile o' parts" for later. In addition, my truck is TOTALLY disassembled, so everything has got to be cleaned, refurbished, etc. When I get to the point that I need something that's going to cost more than I have, and I can't go any further without it, I dig in the "pile o' parts" and find something that needs reworking and do that. A little degreaser, a wire brush or sand blast media, some POR-15 and black paint, or rattle can silver and get that part done, wrap it in bubble wrap or a plastic bag, and store in the "pile o' parts done" stack. You don't think about just how much stuff has to be worked until you get to a point that you need the little bits and pieces and it takes you 2 days to get them ready. My project is my passion and I'm constantly thinking about it, planning it, dreaming it. I get really frustrated when I have to wait for $$ or time to work on it.
For example, I'm putting in a newer 351w and going to a serpentine belt configuration but I don't have the money to build my engine. About a year ago, I went to a junk yard and pulled all the stuff off the front of a 5.8L F150. Got it all for about $50. I hit a slow spot in my funding curve. An $8 bag of blast media and a $4 can of Duplicolor silver and I already had some left over POR-15 and gloss black and I spent an entire weekend blasting, cleaning, prepping and painting the pulleys and brackets. Now, whenever I get an engine, all that stuff will be ready to slap on. It would have sukked to have an engine and then have to wait for time/opportunity to get those parts looking good to install. Work on the little stuff, it keeps you moving forward and makes you feel like you're accomplishing something. If you don't have any to work on, sit down and write out the things you need to do and the order you're going to do them in. You might realize you do have something that needs to be done and the stuff to do it with already. Good luck!
