i have verified TDC also by looking at the valve timing. both are closed and the dizzy is at #1 post on the cap. i know if you are 180 off it will not run. trust me i know it's in right. The engine was running fair(not good but not crap) and all of a sudden one day it would barely run. i had to ad 12 degrees ( 10 degrees advanced to 22 degrees) to get it to smooth out. Also this engine has timing gears and i would think that if it had jumped timing then it would have taken teeth off of the gear.

Check your advance mechanisms in the dist. Both the vac & mechanical. You say 22 degrees. Is that with the vac disconnected?

vac disconnected. advance mech works. it adds 20 some odd degrees timing. you would think it would knock with 48 degrees of total timing but it doesn't.

How about this? Ignore timing marks. Advance the timing little by little until it is hard to crank hot. Back off just enough to make it spin good when starting hot. Let's see how it runs then.

Its your truck. the 6 cyl guys can tell you to dump your money into a motor all they want, but at the end of the day your the one having to toss money down the drain. If you can find your 302 you want than go for it.

Now that i read that i does kinda sound like that :lol: what i was trying to say is these guys can tell you to just keep throwing parts at the 6 but if your tired of the 6 and want an 8 then its your truck to do so with.

i love the six when it runs right. i just can't afford to keep trying to fix this engine and have nothing work.

Try what I suggested with the timing & see what happens. That is how I set timing on older engines. It will give you the most response you can get.

looks like this engine is on it's last leg. she spins over way too fast when starting and it's stumbling more often.

drove the truck 5 miles around town this morning and it's defiantly struggling. it sounds like it's got one weak cylinder because it's got a lope to it and every time it idles down it rocks and it's every revolution. I've got a mustang that i gotta get running but after it gets on the road i think it's time to tear into the engine once and for all. I've got too many questions and i can't answer any of them with the thing in one piece. i'm hoping to have one rebuilt and installed within 2 weeks.
