Pic of the truck as I bought it. Picked it up for $1500 and drove it home. Has manual drum brakes all the way around, power steering. "Rebuilt 460" (didn't care either way as it didn't sound good so I planned on tearing it down eventually anyway). 4 Speed Manual Tranny. Brand new dual exhaust that needs some modification (no H-pipe yet). Steel roll pan. And pretty damn straight and rust free. I wasn't crazy about the paint at first but it's growing on me. I'll save the minor body work for my very last project and repaint it eventually.

Well I originally had planned on driving this truck for the summer and gettin' some tinkering done this Winter but I lost all my oil pressure on a 50 mile freeway run the other night and didn't realize it until it was too late (oil pressure gauge in-op). I decided to yank the motor last night and start coming up with a plan.

The 460 "was" a fresh rebuild which kind of worried me right off the bat. It's hard to find good engine builders around my town. Upon tear down I found that it was definitely just "rebuilt" but I'm finding no evidence of machine work. Looks like somebody slapped in new pistons, lifters and an oil pump. Not sure about the bearings. With the intake off I found 11 bent pushrods, 5 that were completely out of their guides and lifters laying in the valley.

At this point I was feeling all inspired to get some work done on this thing so I decided to do a roll on bed liner this morning. The bed was already in really good shape so I got a 5" wire wheel for my buffer and went to town on the minor surface rust. There wasn't even much rust on it. This picture is a little deceiving because the original color was brown so it looks like rust in the picture. Here's a before pic:

After the wire wheel I gave it an acetone wipe down and used a green 3M pad to prep the surface for the liner then another acetone wipe down. I taped it off and painted the spot inbetween the bed and box that was left over from the quickie paint job. Found a really close match and gave it a quick rattle can job. Turn out really good for a can. Then came the bed liner. Here's a pic after only one coat. I'm going to give it another coat tomorrow morning once it's dry:

Still feeling inspired I decided to go to work on the side box. Prep was a breeze as there was no rust. Just scuffed it up, wiped it down and rolled it on:

That's all for today. I'm planning on painting the door jams and tearing the interior out tomorrow.

Good day TheLetup,

I really dig what you did with the bed! What an upgrade, and probably a lot more sensible than meticulously perfecting the metal and spraying a normal automotive finish in there. You've set it up so that it can actually be used without each job degrading it.

Sure looks like you got a nice deal at $1,500, by the way!

Hey thanks guys. I laid down the second coat of Herculiner on the bed and side box this morning and it looks SO good. If you take your time and put it on thick and even, this kit works great. I bought it at O'Reillys for $80 and spent about $20 more on misc stuff for job (rubber gloves, paper towels, acetone, paint trays, etc.). The only part I screwed up was not removing the masking tape soon enough and made a few spots on the edges look sloppy. Should be super easy to re-tape and touch up later. You have to let it set up for about an hour or two but remove the masking before it's completely dry. Another step that you should do is get a mixer that attaches to a drill to thoroughly mix the cans. You'll have a hard time properly mixing it with a stick.

I'm happy with it for sure. I have zero experience in body work so i didn't want to take on the project of making the bed perfect and trying to match it to the already existing paint job. If it hadn't already been painted I might have tried my hand and smoothing all the little dents out but I plan on actually using this truck so opted for the bed liner option.

I have all my interior parts on order from http://www.dashtop.com/categories/full- ... -1967-1972. I got a new dashtop, highliner, door panels, and arm rests. I have the original factory seat that was already recovered in blue (kind of a deep but not quite navy). Everything I ordered so far is black and I originally planned on black carpet and refinishing the seat in black but I'm contemplating leaving the seat blue and going with blue carpet and then giving the dash some blue accents to give it some personality instead of all black. Thoughts?

My next project is going to be prepping and painting the door jams. Today I got the seat, belts, and dash pad out of it. What do you all think about the seat and carpet? Keep seat blue and go same color blue carpet or go black carpet and re-do seat in black????? While removing the seat today and accidentally put a little 1/4" tear in the top of the back.. Then i said some eff words and then I moved on. Can't believe I tore the new upholstery!

I am probably going to go with a dark grey fabric with a black vinyl trim on my next seat. Been looking for a good 199X seat at PicknPull, but so far no luck. Anyway, what I have currently is a black vinyl seat in my 72, everything slides across the seat in a moderately fast turn, including my Jack Russell. It is also a little hot in the summer sun. I figure fabric will be cooler and stop things from sliding around. Black fabric would be okay, but it shows everything, especially dog hair.

HAHAHA I hear you about the Jack Russell. I took my 2 year old out the night I got the truck on a back road and let him drive on my lap (I probably sound like a horrible dad right now) and when we turned around at the end he slid right from the middle to the pass door and we weren't even going very fast... The black showing everything is exactly why I didn't order the black carpet kit yet. Still undecided but leaning towards blue carpet. I'd also like to get the seat recovered in fabric so I could go blue with silver seems. Might look coolish. I need an artist to do some rendering for me! Any one have Chip Foose's number??

Not much of an update today but I did make it over to the machine shop to drop off my block and heads for machine work. They'll be cleaning everything up, grinding the crank, sonic checking and honing the cylinders, decking the block and installing the cam bearings for me (I don't have a cam bar at my shop right now). I'll also be having port and polish work done by a local porting master. Still haven't fully made up my mind how in depth I want to go on the build. As of now I'm thinking a compression bump to about 9.5:1, semi-aggressive cam, straight up timing set, roller rockers, stainless valves, port match the intake. . . I already have headers and haven't decided which intake to use yet. I may stick with the Edelbrock Performer I had on it but the carb will definitely be changed out. It had a Edelbrock 1406 (600 cfm) on it. I'm thinking a Holley 750 but need to research it some more. I hoping to push 400 horse and keep it nice and reliable. (May have to buy lots of new tires in my future) :)
