9" rear end woes

Post by wndsofchng06 »

Pulled the axles and carrier out of my truck's rear axle to replace the gasket around the carrier housing..... womp womp womp.....

When I got her out, I realized it's also leaking around the shaft to the yoke, AND the carrier housing itself is cracked inside where the nub of the pinion gear rides! Guess I need a new carrier housing! Are all ford 9" rear ends the same? I'll keep my gears (3.00 according to the VIN) and just swap into a new housing... Does anyone have the torque specs on the yoke nut? My Chilton's Manual does not.

Thanks,
Matt

The carrier should be the same so long as it's a 9". Pinion bearing housings can be different but that doesn't matter because you are using some of your stuff, too.
With that broken housing I can't imagine the tolerances remaing true and I suspect there may be some unusual wearing on the gear mesh surfaces which may lead to gear noise and wear once the housing has been swapped. At some point water was in there, your gears have a lot of pitting. Is your vent tube attached or does it just have the fitting with no hose? If it were me, I'd be looking for a replacement complete pumpkin with the same gearing ratio. :2cents:

Yea the tube was off. The fluid showed signs of water also... Bah! Good point on the gear wear.... Pull a part locally has a 71 I need to VIN and see if it matches.
Is there a better gear for fuel mileage I should look for if I'm going to change it out anyhow? Is the 3.00 decent?

3.00 is about the best you'll do for mileage in one of these aerodynamic cinder blocks.

LOL ha ha ha ha. For a 390 it wasn't emptying the tank as fast as I thought it would in the two weeks I drove it. I'm hoping for a speedy recovery, I miss cruising around in it.

Jeff's right. Torque spec = 125-175 ft/lbs with 175 being MAX.

Went and picked up the rear today.... it was from something with a much wider wheel base. The lady selling it had bought it for her 67, but didn't want to mess with swapping the guts out for whatever reason... Got it home, opened it up and its brand new inside! I was going to swap the whole center section, except of course this new rear had larger axles (diameter). After about a 2 hour operation in 104 degree heat, I had swapped the spider gears from my old carrier into the new one, but used all the rest of the new parts! She goes down the road like a champ!
