'70 Crew Cab

Post by dolinick »

I just drove my new F250 home from Round Rock to San Antonio last monday. It had an exhaust leak. I took it to the muffler shop and asked them to asses the exhaust system. They said it needed the doughuts and crossover pipe and exhaust pipe all the way to the muffler (which was a glass pack) and the muffler should be replaced in about a year. I told him I wanted dual exhaust instead of the crossover pipe but didn't have the budget to buy two mufflers right now. I told him to just leave open pipes just past the cab and I will put mufflers on it later. Well it is pretty darn loud! I drove it like that across town today to pick up a trailer. I needed to drop off the trailer at my old rent house so I can go clean out the garage this weekend or monday on my day off.

I had fun driving the truck but it's really loud. :D I am not purposely drawing attention to myself. No, I wouldn't do that.

Glad you are enjoying it Dan! I had the gasket at my apartment for it I just forgot to leave it in the truck. I also have the ash tray. You should be able to get more glass packs at any auto store for a little over 20 bucks if you want.

I wasn't sure how much mufflers would cost of if I could just bolt them on myself. Thanks for the tip. I know it won't pass inspection like it is.

Measure the diameter of your exhaust and you can go buy a couple of glass packs the will slip over them and you can buy clamps and hangers you can attach them with until you can afford to go have them welded up and have the ends put on.

Yes, I want to simply clamp some mufflers on there.

I transferred the title and got a new set of plates today! :D

I keep thinking about tires. I think I should take a closer look at the tires it has. Maybe I could just get two and keep one of the ones it has for a spare. I need to also find a rim (wheel) to use as a spare. It doesn't have a spare underneath does it?

I got two guys commenting how cool it was this evening when I drove to the corner store to get some sodas. I think I understand a little better about the truck's body. Someone did a lot of body work on the truck but it was some time ago. The rust is coming through again. They sealed the bed seam and the hood seam which, from a distance, makes the truck look real smooth.

Well, if I am going to keep driving it around I think I had better sort out the tail lights and fix one or both of the horns. It has a little air horn by the grille in front of the radiator.

Today I replaced the air filter and bought a test light. Maybe I will be able to fix the tail lights.

I was thinking about tires and mufflers today but sorting out the lights might be a better idea to get the truck safe and legal to drive on the road.

I think maybe a 265/75/r16 10 or 8 ply tire will work. I don't want mud or all terrain tires though.

Dan, I have a tire connection so I will see what I can come up with for you.

There are two 265 75 R16s on the rear. If these are not too old and dry rotted then maybe I could just get two tires for the front. I think these are all terrain type tires. I will get exact model later. The front tires are smaller than the rear and do not match. I think I will at least replace both of them. If I wait a few weeks I might be able to get a whole set of new or almost new tires.

UPDATE: My sister and her kids want to go camping tonight because it is spring break. I don't own a tent big enough for my family or me and my wife so I started looking for a cheap craigslist camper shell. I found one! It is fiberglass and matches the color of the truck. It is really nice. It is not perfect but the truck isn't perfect either so it goes together pretty well. I think it looks good on the truck. I think this is becoming our camping truck which is nice. This truck isn't meant to be driven every day even though I love driving it.

Photos coming soon...

I can get that size for about 137 and change carry out. Might be able to get that price down there if you press for it. Add mounting and balancing.

Hey, I got the truck inspected. I actually fixed the taillights and horn myself first. There was a bad spliced wire connection near the trailer harness that was loose. I think the horn relay is bad but the truck has a second "air horn" and another relay mounted by the radiator so I just "borrowed" the hot wire from that relay instead. The "air horn" thingy wasn't working properly anyway.

We took the truck out to the country Monday night. I actually had my wife, two kids, the baby, and our dog we affectionately call "fleabag" loaded in the truck. We met my sister and camped out. We roasted hot dogs and I had a big bonfire.

Her is a short slideshow with a few more photos of the camper on the truck: http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... 62&t=65018

This evening I went and removed the dash pad. I also removed the floor mounted air conditioning unit. And I removed the two little speakers mounted to the posts on each side of the windshield and the old am/fm cassette tape deck.

The dash doesn't look too bad without a pad. I don't have plans to put in a new dash pad anytime soon. It feels a lot roomier in the front seat without the ac unit.

Are you sure this truck has a 360? It really has a LOT of power. Could it be a 390?
