Getting clutch replaced

Post by Bummer72 »

Hey all,

I just made an appointment with our local transmission shop for clutch and other drive train repairs. I just bought the truck about a month ago, and I really haven't felt the clutch slip, per se, but it feels "grabby" and bouncy when pulling out in first unless I pull out "just right". The throwout bearing chatters pretty badly when the clutch is disengaged. I also have a significant amount of greasy dirt slung around the underside near the input and output shafts of the trany, as well as at the differential. Otherwise everything shifts and operates smoothly, both up and down shifting. I haven't checked any fluid levels, because I knew this trip to the shop was due anyways. I have no idea how many miles are on the clutch (for what that's worth, given individual driving styles and what-not).

Is there any recommendations or thoughts I should pass to them from the Fordification.com vast storehouse of knowledge? Perhaps whether to use "such-and-such" size clutch, or be sure to go for "this-or-that" brand parts?

Aside from a new clutch and other parts, such as throwout bearing, rear main seal, transmission shaft seals, and work such as resurfacing the flywheel and labor charges, do my symptoms indicate any other need for repairs, massive repair bills, or more impending doom?

Thanks,
Doug

If your clutch is oel soaked, find & correct the leak. check the intake gaskets. Common leak.
Luk is the OEM supplier to Ford for most applications. & their products are fine..You can buy a complete kit. Disc, cover, & release brng. Replace the pilot brng. too..Good luck.Donnie

Be sure to check the motor mounts and perches. Make sure all is tight, if mounts rubber are old, oil soaked or soft, replace. Old, worn, or broken mounts and or loose mount and perch hardware may result in excessive engine movement, can contribute to clutch chatter.
