Will ZF s5-42 from a 460 bolt up to a 351w

Post by dudezilla38 »

Will ZF s5-42 from a 460 bolt up to a 351w ? The 351w has the same transmission but it went bad on me. A buddy has the same truck but he has a 460 in his. Is there a different bolt pattern or size issue between the two motors to make this swap not happen?

Bellhousings are completely different so it won't work (they don't come off). The 351W trans is not worth as much so you could probably sell or trade the 460 trans for what you need and maybe come out ahead. Hawkrod

The small block transmissions fit far more applications and are much harder to find than the 460 version. If I had a 460 version for sale I'd feel like I won the lottery If I got $300 for it. The small block ones are always closer to a grand and the 7.3 diesel version is in the highest demand since they get used the hardest and have their own unique gearset. The 95-97 S5-47 diesel versions are the most sought after. They shift smoother than the S5-42's with the same slider and detent design used in the S6-650 transmissions. The S5-47's are much easier to work on.

If you have a 460 ZF and a smallblock one the forward housing and the input shaft are the only differences. Most internal parts interchange, but they don't come close to fitting in each other's place. The 460 ZF and triton ZF share the same 1 1/4" input shaft. The Triton ZF's are all S5-47's (or 6 speeds).

It must be where you are, around here 1K is the going rate for a 460 trans if you can find one but diesel and small block trans can be had at Pick and Pull although they are always $3-500 at the swap meet. Hawkrod

Must be the area.

The smallblock ZF's fit a lot of industrial and diesel applications plus they're hard to find. They were only used in 250's and 350's behind the 351 or 300. The diesel ZF's fit trucks that are still used daily and make money. The 460 ZF's fit absolutely nothing owned by anyone who has any money to spend so they aren't in demand.

That is odd because I know at least a dozen guys with ZF's in their 460 highboys and I have one in my 77 supercab 4X4. I have been hoping to find one for my 79 4X2 but they are always gone at the yards and the trans shops want a ton but will only pay a pitance. You can use a diesel one in a 460 and the other way around but the ratios don't work well and you have to do some redrilling. I would gladly swap one from a 300 for one from a 460 if somebody here in soCal is looking to trade. Hawkrod

I'll take your dozen guys with 460/ZF highboys and raise you the 3 dozen guys I know who've pulled out their 460's to replace them with diesel engines

If it has a 460, 454 or V10 in it it's real cheap around here. I've watched some nice V10 Super Duties sell in the $2500 range in the past few months.

Compare the big gas engine pickup prices to the prices that 90's Ford and Dodge diesels sell for and it's scary.

There's an over abundance of 90's Ford 4x4's with 460's around here and the same cheap ones sit on craigslist for ages.

Yeah, diesels are not as popular here as they used to be. We sell cars for a living and if its diesel it is pretty much going somewhere else because none of the dealers we work with can sell them anymore. I found out one of the reasons why when I took a trip to Flagstaf and had buy fuel out a truckers tank to get back. There is no place between Needles and Barstow that even sells diesel anymore! SoCal is not diesel frendly! With CA standards and state and Federal taxes disel also costs a lot more too. I saw $5.59 yesterday down in LA! LOL Hawkrod
