67 Ford Shortbed

Post by okie67 »

Hello everyone,

Starting a thread to document my 67 F100 shortbed rebuild. I plan on making this a daily driver for now and as I get time try and go through the truck completely.

My grandfather had a 68 stepside when I was growing up. This truck passed from my grandfather, to my uncle, my father and then to me. Unfortunately I let my ex talk me in to trading this truck off almost 20 years ago.

I started looking originally for another 68 to rebuild to replace the first one I owned. After looking for almost a year I found this 67 and went to look at it. I immediately fell in love with the 67. It is rough, rusty and has been slightly abused. But I feel with perserverance, determination, a lot of hard work and of course a steady cash flow, I can get this amazing truck back on the road.
I bought the truck in October and hauled her home on a U-Haul trailer. The truck starts and drives but needs some major work to be safe, not to mention legal to drive.

Initial investment $600 for the truck and $100 for the trailer to bring it home.

I will update with some pics, soon.

As you can see someone removed the original bed and bolted on this aftermarket flatbed frame.

The bumper had been welded to the frame (Think its a Chevy bumper as it looks identical to the one on my 89 Chevy 4x4

Real good start for a steal of a price too! But quick get that bumper off the truck before it gets angry at you LOL! I bet you could probably sell the flat bed frame to help fund your build? It looks pretty stout. I do love a short bed truck, my first dent way back in the early 80's was a short bed. :hd:

Thanks Basketcase, The cab is in really rough shape I have been inspecting it as I get time. It seems that someone thought silicone, grease rags and sheet metal with screws is a good idea for patching rust.

Posting more pics

$200 and a 6 hour road trip netted me this find, it doesn't look like the step I had on my original 68 due to the inner wheel wells. But it works and looks correct on the outside. Solid bed no rust holes anywhere! Drivers side has a circular hole cut on the back of the outer wheelwell. Under frame gas tank mebbe? Guy I bought it from said he was taking it in for scrap metal if he had not sold it to me this week. That would have been a shame for sure.

Bed rough fitted on the truck, back bumper is in the way and will have to come off. It makes the bed sit up too high in the back and will not let it be bolted into position.

Bumper has too come off so the new bed will fit correctly!

I am watching with interest. As I understand it dents have a 2" longer wheelbase and the beds are longer. If that be so you should find yourself having problems aligning that bed on your chassis & wheelbase. Since the dents also had wider frames the mounting points of the bed will not line up with mounting points on your chassis.

elgemcdlf,

I have the bed sitting on the frame now. Only thing keeping me from bolting it down is the "Chevy" bumper some joker welded to the frame. All bolts appear to line up, with the exception of the cross brace near the back of the wheel well, it appears to have been bolted in one bolt hole to far forward. Looks like they had the braces bolted in just to keep the bed sturdy, and to keep from losing the braces, since all the wood is missing.

Side to side the bolts pattern matches perfectly on the frame.

I plan on getting the bumper removed this week and will update with pics once I get the bed level on the frame.

You guys really know your trucks, the front of the bed lines up perfectly, the back however does not. It is roughly 2 inches too long and the back bolts are roughly 2 inches off center of the frame holes......

I do have a plan! And I still believe I can use this bed and it will look ok.

I have more pics and will put them in a follow-up post.

Top of the drivers bed-rail and all of the Bondo I removed from it today. It looks really good now, needs some minor repairs but I couldnt stand leaving all the Bondo on there.
