Can a 2 speed planetary gear .........

Post by jades addiction »

I have a 68' 3 speed manual trans.
I would like to have a cruising gear so my question is Can a 2 speed planetary gear to the rear housing from a 3 speed overdrive be added or swapped to a conventional 3 speed transmission ? Is there a kit for this also? Or any leads to classified ads.......
Thanks guys FORDification rocks!
300 six banger 3 speed on the tree with 33,000 orig. miles Next was to get it painted and restored ,3 years later a new motor f(1986 302 5.0 HO ) parts from a 1971 mustang to a 1965 mustang .. huge aluminum radiator to keep at 160 degrees, bored 60 over, cam 750cfm edelbrock with a matching performer, roller rockers on new edelbrock 201 aluminum heads, and mustang headers,HEI distributor, Just put on a power disc brake conversion kit 11 3/4 inch rotors from MPBrakes ,brings a whole new meaning stopping on a dime!Got rear leaf springs ,dropped 2.5 inches and she cruises so much nicer!

Are you saying that you have a 3 speed with OD, like an early Borg Warner, if so Why not use the complete trans? Can you be a bit more descriptive in what trannys you are working with..?

Other than a Gear Vendors overdrive (very expensive) or an old Hone overdrive from the early '70's (also very rare and expensive now) I would have to say no. The Borg-Warner overdrives were on the T-85N trannies (and weaker T-86 trannies) but were never installed on the Ford 3.03 trannies so no adapters were made to fit other transmissions to my knowledge.

Sorry pal, I misread your post. I thought that you had an old BW trans on the bench that had a good overdrive on it, & you wanted to install just the overdrive assy on you current case.
Re-read your original post & look at it from my perspective ..You may understand it but I didn't.
I have mated a lot of mismatched parts in my 50 years of tranny work, but then I have a fairly extensive machine shop..and have worked on trannys all my life.

If you are just building a cruiser, not a drag machine...there are other options you can choose.
A world class T5 BW will make a nice street machine, but will NOT do any heavy work..
To cut & respline your shaft & make adapter plates etc, etc,,,Would cost too much.
Someone in the forum may have better ideas...Hang in there , get loose, & good luck, Donnie
