NP 435 hanging up in gears
i bought a rebuilt NP435 from a guy and have only put about 1000 miles on it, and i have had a problem with it when i go from a forward gear to reverse it hangs up and wont move out of its tracks. Most of the time i can bang around on it, switch gears, or swear and finally it goes back into gear. The other day i drove it for the 1st time in awhile and it hung up so bad i couldn't get it to work again. I took out the gear shift and looked inside only to be confused where everything should be. I put it back in and moved around quite abit and finally it started to move again. Oh yeah, when you would try and go to neutral and let on the clutch it would move forward, but try to put it in a gear and it would bind up and not move out of it tracks. Any ideas?

It sounds like you're in two gears at once and when you put it in neutral you're only in one gear.
When you take the shifter out look and see if all the shift rails are in the neutral position.

Pull your top plate off and check it out.
It's impossible to be in two gears at once- If all the parts are in place. There are shift rail interlocks in the top plate. If they're missing or in the wrong places you get what you have here.
Sounds like the rebuilder didn't know what he was doing.

Re: NP 435 hanging up in gears
Thanks for the help guys. What exactly is the neutral position of the gear slides. I have never had one apart so i don't know what is correct. And the guy that built is another story that would take quite abit of time to complain about, but it is what it is, and it is a problem. It sure acts like its hung in in 1st and reverse, its usually happens when i shift from 1st to reverse and it will not move when i release the clutch it just bogs the motor down. Then when i take the gearshift outta reverse and place it in neutral position and then release the clutch it moves forward. I really dont want to have to pull the tranny, so what can i do by removing the gearshift and the top plate? What do i look for?

Re: NP 435 hanging up in gears
That's different than what you first wrote. Doing it in ONLY first gear is a different deal than any forward gear.
Check the wear pads on the 1-2 shift fork. Bet they're in the bottom of the tranny and you're 1-2 fork is paper thin. Gear oil's probably nice and sparkly too. Without pulling the top plate you can tell if the fork's worn and wear pads are missing. Run the stick from 1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2 and feel any slop in the fork-slider fit. Then change over to the 3-4 quadrant and do the same thing 3-4-3-4-3-4-3-4-3. If you got a feel for things you'll feel what I'm talking about.
A good used 435 top plate should be under $50 from any wrecking yard or a few bucks more from a trans builder.
