4x4 wont go in 4x4

4x4 wont go in 4x4
I have a 1970 F250. 360 with 4spd. Im pretty sure the drive line is all orig. It has to much grease and gunk on the transfer case for me to identify it yet. It has what I think is original hubs. They have no identification on them. they just turn right or left.They are like knobs that come out. But I cant get it in 4x4 anything. It is extremely hard to shift the transfer case. My question is what should I investigate first? The hubs or the transfer case?

30 second check-
1) T-case in 2wd
2) lock hubs
3) turn driveshaft by hand.
If it turns it's in the axle. If it doesn't it's somewhere else.

when shifting into 4 high, I always did so while moving, revved the motor slightly, then backed off the throttle while pulling on the shifter, made shifting into fairly smooth. Sometimes sittimg still things just don't quite line up.

Don't do that. Things like that keep transmission builders busy!
The slider dog teeth inside a transfer case are POINTED (unless you shift them like you describe above, then the tips look like mushrooms). It is not difficult at all to line the dog teeth on the sliders and gear faces so they mesh without using engine power.
The right way would be the vehicle rolling ever so slightly, transmission in nuetral, hard yank on t-case shifter.

I have to disagree, I ran my first 71 4x4 that way for 6 years, restored the vehicle and inspected the T-case, and there wer no issues with it, ran it another 6 years that way, sold to my sister, and it's still going. We may have to agree to disagree, but I have about 25 years driving these 67-72 4x4's, and have not had this fail me yet.

If you are having trouble moving the shifter???? Mud, grease, road grime, salt, & lack of use will render the shifter hard to operate...I am unsure of your question, but get a can of your favorite penetrating oel and waste the whole can on the linkage while an assistant tries to move the lever.
