ford 9 inch swap
I found a posi out of a 77 and want to put it in the 68 I'm building. I don't believe I can use the 68 housing as it is 4 " narrower. I do have the housing out of the 77. Can I just use the 77 housing? Will the extra 4" width mess me up? Will the rear tires stick out too far? Any advice will be much apreciated.

Cut the spring pads off the housing and mount them to match the springs on the 68.
Nope, they won't stick out too far (depending upon your rims and backspacing). The extra 4" will make the rear wheels line up with the fronts.

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???

Before you go to all the work of replacing the entire rearend assembly- pull an axle out of each and count splines. if they are the same, just change the third member (pumpkin). About a two hour job vs several hours swapping e brake cables, messing with spring mounts, etc. You may have to change the yoke on the front of the third member as well, but still quicker and easier than the entire thing.
