changing rear end gear oil

Post by thebannister8 »

hi all...i think i have a semi-floating removable carrier rear end...it has no cover plate on the back and i can't find a drain plug...how would i go about changing the gear oil...i could siphon it out but i'd rather do it another way unless i have to take it apart...also the manual says to use 80 or 90 hypoid gear lubricant...i've topped it off before and used that but another question is the manual says for a manual transmission to use 80 or 90 transmission lubricant...is that the same as hypoid gear lubricant...thanks

:? a 9"rear end....if so,siphon or tear apart....only options. If not a 9...what is this kind of rear end :hmm:
I've had enough and I'm not alone

The easiest way to change the fluid with out pulling the rear end apart
is to buy a suction gun and go thru the fill plug and suck out the old then refill with the new

It's most likely a 9" rear, same as my 67... :yt: the only way to change it is tear it down or use suction...use the 80/90 gear oil...i dont know what they are talking about in reference to 80/90 trans lube in a rear end...maybe they mean if you have locker rear...perhaps some one else here knows of this... :hmm:
just had my 9" rear rebuilt for 500 bucks, well worth it,basically got a whole new center section for that price
remember the key is to start what you finish....lol....happy cruising...

thank you all for your information....i looked at a number of things on the internet and it seems to me that it's a 9"...what i did 67mann was describe it as my manual does to differenciate between 2 types of rear ends...because if i could find that out i could put it together with a picture in my manual...the manual doesn't put the 2 together...thanks for the great link tnlprt...ccryder2011 i was talking about 2 different things and kinda put the 2 together...what i meant was(i started a new post on it) is can i use the same gear oil for 3 speed tremec manual trans as for my rear end...thanks
