conversion from auto transmission to manual
What considerations or adaptions are needed to convert a auto transmission to a manual on a 73 f100 with a 360 motor? Thanks

Here's your shopping list: (All found on a donor FE powered F series from either a Bump or a Dent era pickup)
FE manual trans bell housing, clutch fork, ball pivot (attaches to an FE's block for Z bar mounting), frame bracket for Z bar mounting, Z bar, clutch pedal assembly (a dent would be the better choice in you application) threaded rods for clutch fork operation, trans cross member with trans mount (automatic trans cross member's are different than manual trans versions), speedometer cable, pilot bushing (mounts inside crank shaft end for trans input shaft locating), flywheel, clutch disk, throw out bearing, drive shaft (you might want to get the whole thing from the donor.)
Probably a few bits and pieces I've left out, but these should be your major acquisitions.
...then have at it.

and a good mechanical apptitude. Prepare for a bunch of fun/work, swearing and greese. Sure is a lot easier going from manual to automatic. I am happy with the Old Fart A/T in mine Knees and legs R not what they used 2 B Have fun.

Hey guys, Thanks for the replies I am new to the sight and haven't understood that I need to keep checking the threads. I am considering the change to a manual transmission because of the economy of fuel and the increased power for my f100.

you could change your rear end ratio, but you will sacrifice one way or the other.

You have plenty of engine so why not consider a final drive ratio change...a lot less $$$ & a

It's all a matter of personal choice: when I was young I always wanted manual shift gear boxes.
But, I have been building automatic's since 1962---Always at dealers until I opened my own shop in 1979...then, from '79 when I opened my own shop until 1989. I built anything that came thru the door. Foreign---Domestic--didn't matter--I enjoyed the challenge.
It was during those years, that the production converter industry was finding it's market place. I thought that I should re-school & get the equipment & education needed to build my own converters.From 8" Opal's to Power Smoke 3 clutch diesels.
I closed the shop when I hit 62, 8 years ago next week..Do the math, I'll be 70.
I still have my original parts truck...a 1986 2.8 carbed , A4LD,,Aerostar that I've had all these years.. I still drive it somewhere at least once a week...It has 210,000+ on it now and I like driving it.
My family car is a VW Jetta Diesel, 5 speed.......50 mpg & I still enjoy shifting the gears.
& my toys are various old 60's series II Land Rovers, ALL are manuals, with lots of shift levers, 4 to be exact. One is right hand drive.
I am now in the process of installing a 5 cyl Mercedes turbo diesel in a 1971 Econoline to run on WVO.......So that is just a bit about me & my likes & dislikes,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Donnie
BTW, I still enjoy kicking the Jetta in the ass once in a while and cranking thru the gears.
My drag biking days are behind me as are my Smoke run cars.. To all those that enjoy shifting sticks.........GO FOR IT.................later, Donnie

I've built automatics since '73, in just about any vehicle you can imagine. From imports to big Allison units in busses (V-drive), trucks (MT40/41/42, AT540, MT640/650, HT750), heavy equipment (Terex pans and dozers, Fiat-Allis loaders), I've seen and built some of them all. Self-taught on all of them, by the way...
Automatic is the way to go if you're looking for an everyday driver, but for a toy like my truck, being able to shift that stick is a pleasant change-of-pace.
