Rear axle, what is this and question about seals?

Post by jasondart »

I had a leak in the passenger rear axle seal. Took it apart with out issue, but found this inside. My guess it is from an old injury. :) It looks like some build up of metal and I cannot get it off. The bearing on the axle looks newer, just going to replace the seal. Is there only 1 seal?

For reference, you are looking into the right rear axle.

yes.

You should find a way to remove that metal it looks like it will interfere with the seal and/or bearing. :2cents:

Well I put the rear axle back together and a few days later I found a leak that was running down the wheel. I have a few questions about proper placement of parts and proper part number. I think the parts store gave me the wrong size seals.

Image

Part 1177 - from the diagram is the seal. What part number is this from Napa or Advance? I want to be sure I get the proper size in there. It seemed a little loose when I installed them.

Part 1001 - is the gasket. I got two of these, one was a metal one and the other was paper. They also were a little off on the size. They seemed to go a little too high and did not properly seal. Am I correct that a gasket goes on each side of the brake housing backing plate? What is the part number for these gaskets? Are both supposed to be metal? I see there is a raised side to the metal gaskets, what side of the metal gasket faces toward the wheel bearing?

:hmm: quick Question....does your bearing look like the one pictured(1225)in diagram. There is a large&small bearing 9"rearend and the diagram shows "small"
bearing. I only ask, because there is no info other than the pic's you posted. I know when I got mine from Napa.....the bearing dictated the seal
I've had enough and I'm not alone

Yes it does look like that bearing in the diagram it also has the retainer part 1180. I am 99% sure it is a 9" rear and not the 9 3/8".

as 67 mann said the 9" rear end has two different bearing sizes wich would require two different seals... :2cents:

99% of seal leaks are caused from improper installation. Dimple the edge or push it in even a little too far and it'll leak. The metal I would knock off with a chicel if nothing else. Stuff a rag in the axle tube to keep debris from working it's way further in.

What are the part numbers of both those seals? I can probably narrow it down to what one it is not, cause it is not the ones I put in first. :)

NPD has it listed on page 143-and they are open on Sunday, I'd call them. They can usually have the part to you in a matter of 2-3 days.
I'd also look real closely at the area where the seal rides on the axle shaft. I've seen axle shafts "scored" from years of use to the point a new seal won't hold. :2cents:
I'd also go to NAPA and just get both seals-then return the one you don't need if you live in a remote area far from parts stores.
