Hello everyone. I need a little help with my 1994 F150. I know that is a litle out of the years we are talking about hear but I also know there are alot of very smart people on here. We bought my son a 1994 F150 extended cab 4X4. The truck is set up with the 5.0 liter V-8 mated to the M5R2 5 spead standard transmission. Like only a teenage boy can do, he took this bullet proof set-up and rendered it useless within a couple months.
His transmission is a hit an miss right now. Sometimes you have gears, sometimes you don't. Sometimes you can put the shifter it what ever gear you want and you are just in 1st. Sometimes you can put it in nuetral and you are still in first. Other times it seems to work, but you will shift into a gear (say 2nd) and you are in neutral. Other times again it seems to work, but it won't go into 3rd, 4th or 5th. Like I said, it is really hit and miss as to what it going on. So the real question is has anyone had something like this happen before and what was the outcome?
Next Question: I am really assuming that when I pull the tranny, we are going to see that we need a full rebuild. I have been looking on line and found a couple sites that are offering full rebuilt M5R2 tranny's for $650 to $800 plus a couple hundred in shipping (back and forth for core deposit). Here are a couple of the sites I am talking about. They state that all wearable parts are replaced with new parts, this includes: seals, bearings, synchronizers, O-rings, bushings, bands, gaskets, and gears and they come with a 1 year warranty. Has anyone had any experience buying a rebuilt transmission from any online sites (other than e-bay which I have read horror stories about). And have any suggestions of places to look?

Re: 5 Speed Manual
I would expect to find a combination of worn shift forks, worn shifter pivot seats and bad pocket/thrust bearings by your description.
I would be leary of exchange transmissions sold online. You have little recourse when there is a problem. It is best to have your transmission repaired.
Also, at a minimum you should expect a 2 year warranty on parts and labor supplied during the rebuild. I had a transmission shop for several years and always put 2 years on everything and explained to the customer if your transmission lasted the last 15 years or so it should last that much or longer after I go through it and that's the truth. If you get a quality rebuild it should atleast last as long as the original did.
There are exceptions. I did have a few comebacks that were my fault, but also had some that were from gross abuse like just not having a clue in the world how to drive.
I used to charge $750 to go through an M5R2 if it didn't need any gears replaced. I did a lot of them and always enjoyed working on them.
