68 2wd swap to 73 4wd

Post by bike5087 »

So... I am 90% sure I've commited to buying a $400 1973 4wd f250 with a blown 360 to swap to a 68 2wd f250 with a nice 360.
I plan to swap the body and the engine off the 68 onto the frame of the 4wd 73.
Will my 68 360 swap directly to the 73 or do I need to find different motor mounts? Any other advice?
I have a four hour trip (in the 68) to pick this thing up and trailer it back. It will be an adventure. Wish me luck!

I looked every where for some info on this and came to the conclucion that is it. I used a 95 chassis for my swap but I still think some of the things to think about will be similar. Will the steering column fit (rag joint in same spot)? What brake master will you use? what wiring will you use? what gas tanks will you use (rear tank and filler issues)? what rad, and are the hoses mounted in the right spot? one of the things I never thought about was that I had to channel my tool box to fit in the wider frame. I hope this helps. Good luck on your adventure!

You might want to contact http://www.fordification.com/forum/memb ... ile&u=3474 as his swap was a very similar swap and he could probably answer all these questions for you.

This is turning into a true adventure: wife is pissed, there is a snowstorm coming, I have a three and a half hour drive (in a 2wd 68 f250) ahead of me to pick up the donor truck, and am close to spending more on preparation for the trip (a new trailer brake controller and renting a trailer + fuel) than I'll pay for the donor truck!

Wife is actually ok with it so far - dealing with it better than I thought she would. Donor truck is a real piece of work, needs some brake work ( I may look around for a disc brake dana 44 to swap in ), needs a little welding on the frame crossmember near the steering box, and who knows what else. Some good news - it came with a pretty decent bumpside bed already on the dentside frame.
The old 68 did a very impressive job hauling the donor truck on a trailer - I did have to shift down into 2nd to summit North Cotchetopa Pass, but other than that and the massive headwind - we boogied!
