Axles ID Tags

Post by usmcjones1988 »

I can not find what the tags on my Dana 44 front and Ford 9 inch rear tags means here are what they say:

FRONT
DANA 44
4.09 D8TA VE
610049 9

REAR
FORD 9 INCH
WFE-OAAN 7JB
4L11 9 393D

If anyone can help thanks.

I found that the 610049 means 1978 1/2 F150 Im guessing the 4.09 is the gears, maybe? the D8TA VE I have no idea. As for the rear I know that 4L11 is supposed to be the gear ratio but that doesnt make sense to me.

I don't know all the nitty gritty numbers, I know the basic stuff.

Any Ford part number like D4TE C7TA, etc. the first 2 figures are the date C=60's, D=70's, E=80's and so on. All your numbers there hover around D7 and D8 which means they're all newer than 1977 parts.

The front axle has 4.09 gears in it and the rear has 4.11 with a limited slip. if it was a plain jane open diff it would just say 4.11 not 4L11.

I'd bet your 205 was built on November fourth 1977.

Pretty much any gear lube you can buy has a friction modifier additive for limited slip diffs. If the diff chatters after an oil change you can add more friction modifier.
