How many splines

I have a Dana 44 Im trying to get new locking hubs for it and I was wondering for the splines count is it how many splines are on the end of the axles that connects to the hub?

The hub end on my 68 d 44 hd has 19 splines

I figured it was a 19 spline so i got a new set of warn hubs for it and now they wont fit they dont go far enough back on the axle shaft to allow the retention snap ring to go on anybody have a idea of how to fix it or if it should even be like that.

Inspect the splines, look for any nicks,dents any deformations make sure they are straight.they can they a lot of abuse.
Small things can be fixed with a small file if you are careful .If you cant fix them I have a set with new U-joints I do not need PM me if you need them.

they dont go far enough back on the axle shaft to allow the retention snap ring to go on
I can remember on my one 44 that I owned for over 20 years having to reach behind the backing plate and push outward on the axle shaft u-joint to get the snap ring on.

Open or closed 44?

its and open 44 and even with pushing the back on the the axle u joint it still wont go on all the way im going to pull the original hubs out and measure them to see if it is a size thing ill make sure to take pics and post them.

here are the pic this is of the hub it still not going in all the way i think that the nut that holds the hub is longer than normal so that it wont go all the way in:

I was reading in another forum that they said that you dont need to use the inner retention snap ring which doesnt sound very good so before i run it with out i through i would talk to you guys.

I have never ever ran that snap ring. And never had a problem either.

ok good i have been a little scared running it without it i feel like the hub is going to fall off.
