ghostly selector lever

Wondered if anyone could toss me some bones on this novelty issue:

When I take off from a stop with hard acceleration, my gear selector lever, (auto, c6), lunges up almost thowing itself into neutral. Trying to figure out which one of the mounts are bad... motor mounts or the trans. mount. My 360 is pretty fiesty and burning tire is extremely easy, however, I do not want to seriously damage anything in the drivetrain. Thanks to all in advance for the replies. :hmm:

I'd start with the motor mounts. It's not pretty to lose a driver's side motor mount on an FE as it will try to torque itself right out of the engine compartment.

Pop your hood with the motor running and give it a few revs at the carb. Watch if the motor jumps off it's motor mount(s).

Okay, gave it a bunch of snappy revvs; the whole truck sorta rocks with it. No jumping off the mounts.... I did take the opportunity to add all new motor mounts and a tranny mount to my order from LMC. Maybe the offending part will present in the meantime.

OK, than how are your cab's rubber mounts? ...or condition of cab sheet metal in cab mount areas? It's also possible that if they're shot, your whole cab is shifting on the chassis causing your shift lever to move as you've described.

Revving it up in Park (or Neutral) won't show whether your mounts are bad or not, because there's not a load on the engine. Put your foot on the brake, put the transmission in drive, and start giving it gas...like you're trying to power-brake the truck. (Be sure to do this on pavement, not gravel.) See if the left side of the engine raises up when you do this. If a tire starts to spin before the engine starts to move, the mounts are OK.

The transmission is moving, which is pushing the selector rod. The only ways the transmission will move are if the motor mounts are bad and/or the transmission mount is.
