Is it possible to use a newer 5speed manual transmission with a 71 302 motor is is all the bolt patterns different? Just curious, I'm sure this has been posted on here somewhere but I can't seen to find it.

Yes, it is possible to swap in the M5R2, it's actually pretty easy. There's a great write up on this in the tech section. Check it out.
