9 inch problems

Post by blumule »

ive decided to finally track down this annoying vibration.Im now at the rear end, and noticed my tires dont run true. Pulled the tires and drums and the axles have same movement.Replaced both axles with new bearings and no change. driveshaft seems fine, I replaced both universals. could the problem lie with a bearing inside the center section? If so, which bearings would cause movement of axles? Also how hard is it to change the bearings, or should i just look for amother center?

Sounds like you might possibly have a bent axle. Pull the tire off and measure the runout from the tire mounting flange with a dial indicator. There shouldn't be any runout. If there is, replace the axle.

ive swapped out both axles and bearings. could a bad center section cause axles to not turn true?

No the center section bearing will not cause your wheels to not run true

You may want to check your wheels to make sure they are not bent

Also you may have a bent axle tube

Lift your truck off the ground, run it in gear and replace what is out of balance, out of round or untrue.

i cant really pinpoint problem. both axles have been replaced with no change in vibration. there is still a very slight wobble in the axle flange. How do i check for bent tube? trucdk took a nasty hit to the passenger side wheel couple years ago. Truck sat for a long time after . not sure when vibration started. Hit so hard it pushed whole rearend sideways and bent leafspring. ive replaced the center section, leafspring axles and bearings. Only thing left is driveshaft and rear housing. vibration is intermittant, 45mph and 65 mph. driveshaft maybe?

If you have already changed your wheels I would venture a guess and say your housing is bent

You can check for a bent housing with a 4 wheel alignment machine
or a very accurate tape measure by checking your wheel base from side to side

The "slight wobble in the axle flange" is definitely a problem.

i put a laser level across back of garage door , crawled under truck and sighted in axle. From center to driver side backing plate there was a definite increase in angle, about 1/8. on same side as wobble appears. i think this is my problem. bent housing.
