Transmission Tunnel Cover Applications

Scored a transmission hump cover, the one on the floor inside the cab, from my '71 parts truck. My '70 didn't have one, originally. Originally a 302, going back in with a 351w. Figure while I have it, I might as well use it. I'm starting with a C4 but may upgrade in the future to a C6. The question's are: Are the hump covers required for a C4? Are there different sizes of hump covers for C4 than for C6? If so, are the footprints (mounting holes) the same between the two? I believe I read that a hump cover is required for a C6, somewhere on here. So, if the footprints the same, I might as well go ahead and do the cutting and drilling while my cab's stripped. If not, I may wait until I have to swap transmissions and do it then. However, if the C4 requires one, and the footprints different, then I might as well try to find a C6 cover. Catch my line of thinking? As always, thanks for you help!

Neither of my 67s have a removable transmission cover in them.
One has a C6 and one has a three speed manual and they both fit fine.
Not sure the reason for the removable covers but someone will chime in and school us.

I've always been puzzled why Ford installed the removable transmission cover in some but not all 1967 through 1972 F series pickups myself. My long gone 1967 F100 with a 352 and automatic didn't have a removable cover but my 1970 with a 360 originally and C6 does have one. The cover removed DOES make it easier to remove/install a motor and trans.

I personally like the removable cover for access purposes and from what little I know, all covers are the same from 1965 up to at least 1975 (I've got a 1975 cover and it matches my 1970 exactly).

Do you need one? That's up to you. If you want to go through the work, than by all means, do so. Will your C4 fit without one? Yes. Will a C6 fit without one? I would think so.

Weeelllll, I kinda cut a hole and put a floor shifter in mine a few years ago. Column shift started acting up and I was new to bump world so I took the easy way out. Instead of rebuilding the column I elected to buy a POS floor shifter from AZ. Didn't do too pretty a job on it either. It wore out in about 2 years so I replaced it with another one of the same type, that is, POS. After that one got all loosy goosy on me, I bit the bullet and rebuilt the column shift. Now I've got an ugly hole in my floor that I keep covered up with a piece of cardboard under the rubber mat I want to patch the hole anyway so I figure I'll put the cover in while I'm doing it. The hump cover came on trucks with C6 and 4-speed trannys.

The 4-speed required it so that you could remove the transmission.

The C6 is a larger automatic, and because of that, there are some clearance issues with the low/non-removable hump. Lots of people here have installed C6's without installing the taller cover, but most will tell you it's pretty close.

As long as you've got a cover, and you need to fix that shifter hole, I'd say go ahead and do it now while there's nothing in the way to hinder you. Besides that, no matter what tranny you go with, the extra clearance is a plus!!

Who knows, someday you may want to put a close-ratio (4:1 first gear) T19 in there!!!

Would putting in that "hump cover" cause any "issues" with the fit of the existing (no hump) floor mats / carpets?

The reason I bring this up is that the '68 I am restoring has the hump (C-6 trans), and I need to get new carpets (eventually). From what I can see at looking at the variuios supplier's catelogs is that the carpets that fit the "humps" are hard to find. Whereas the non-hump mats / carpets are more readily available (and they do not fit the "hump" floors).

I just thought this may be the only "issue" with installing the hump cover, that you may want to consider. Perhaps one of the "gurus" out there can advise us?

Yes, the carpeting and the factory full-width vinyl covering that came with a low-hump floor will not fit once you install the tall-hump cover.

A lot to consider. I do intend to put carpet in but hadn't thought about factory pre-cut/formed so much. Figured I'd have to use do-it-yourself style and make it fit best I can because I was sure if the factory red would match what I was looking for. Since I had to patch that floor anyway, and I did a pi$$ poor job cutting it, I might as well install the cover and take my chances. Thanks for all the input!
