Ford three speed rebuild help and parts sources?

Post by Florian »

Hey!

I found out that my transmission needs a rebuild yesterday...the hard way as usual. My clutch release bearing slipped as I wanted to shift from intermediate to high gear. Don´t know if the trans was the cause for this or only a bad clutch adjustment. but the trans needs a rebuild anyway. Towed the truck home today and pulled the trans.

Removed the top cover and took a look inside. Thing I noticed are:

- Input shaft wobbles
- shift lever for 1st gear and reverse is out of adjustment
- when turning over by hand in 1 gear a bearing makes noise
- rear seal leaking
- trans fluid level seemed kinda low to me, don´t know if that´s supposed to be like that. I put a screwdriver in next to the gears on the passenger side. There was about 2 1/4 - 1/2" of fluid. The gears were in the fluid and picked up fluid when turned.

During driving I had all kinds of problems which I now know where cause by the transmission. I had a bad stumble upon acceleration in all gears, a whining noise in 1st gear and a knocking sound when letting the truck roll in any gear. Reverse was sometimes hard to get in.

The gears look okay to me, but what do I know. I looked for rounded off edges etc. but didn´t see anything terrible.

Here are some pictures:

I also took some videos, I´ll see if the youtube upload will work this time.

The identification tag on the transmission says:

RAT - H - 3
075582

The tag on the driver´s door says "C" for the transmission option. So it´s the 3 Speed Ford L.D.

Now my question is: Where can I get a decent overhaul set for this transmission? Which parts should I consider replacing with the above described observations? Is my transmission a 3 speed Tremec transmission? I found this term when searching for parts.

Thanks!

rebuilt mine a month ago. Toms bronco parts will fix you up with parts. Get the syncro springs. Not included with kit.

That tranny looks Okay, just needs bearings and syncros if any thing, Let me see if I can find a link to the supplier I use,
Terry @ T & B Tranny in Wa,

Dont know what would have been causing the knocking when rolling ?

Thanks for the replies guys!

I already contacted some transmission shops and already got some offers for rebuild kits or already rebuilt transmissions.

I think the front bearing caused the knocking.

Just to add to it, depending on your quotes. I got my rebuild kit from autozone for the RAT in my 71. Including syncros it was $103 plus tax. Tooks some time but I got it done and it still continues to work well.
