the 9 inch length of axles are the same for our trucks. 29 7/8 spline count can be different depending on axle. most 31 splines were found 70 /71 and up. but 28 spline was still used during those years.

The 31-spline axles were found in the 9-3/4" rearends, some of which were installed in late ('71-'72) bumpsides. The 9" rearends in our trucks all had 28-spline.

I'm sure there are many members with parts trucks. Post something in the Parts Wanted forum of the FORDification Classifieds, and I'll bet someone will help you out. Otherwise, hit the local U-Pull-It.

that year pickup is hard to find around here. whats the best way to tell if its 28 spline without tearing it apart first.

Although 28-spline axles are used in most light Ford trucks and cars of that era, the housings they're used in are different widths. These Ford pickups use a unique-width axle housing and axle, so you won't find them on any other vehicle...is has to be a '68-'72 Ford F100. (The '67s has narrow rear brakes which were widened for the '68 model year, which included a slightly longer axle.)

As for telling if a certain rearend has 28 or 31 spline axles, there really isn't a way, short of finding the axle tag and decoding it to see it's original application....or just removing the four nuts holding the axle retainer to the housing the pulling the axle.
