Dana 70B Pinion Seal from a 1971 F350 Dually

Post by LuvMyScamper »

Hi there:

I'm new to the forum (see my post in Welcome Mat: http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... =1&t=60614). We just bought a 1971 F350 Scamper motorhome. It has a Dana 70B real axle with dual wheels. The pinion seal is leaking, and we are having a hell of a time finding the right replacement seal. The seal that is in it right now is a CR seal with part #528959, which our parts stores are not able to cross-reference with anything. The seal they do have for a Dana 70 is by National, and part #9316, which doesn't fit. Another company, Parts for Trucks who sell Spicer products, only sells one seal for a Dana 70 - part #42449, and we do not know if that is the right one or not. They said it's a special order, and we'd have to pay up front and no refunds if it doesn't fit. It's only $10, so not a big loss if it's the wrong one. But's a PIA to keep finding out we have the wrong one.

So does anyone have any idea on what the part number is for a pinion seal for a 1971 Dana 70B dually? Thanks in advance!

Napa DOES indicate that part # 42449 crosses over and IS available. The application is a DRW 1971 Ford with Dana 70 rear axle. I just called my Buddy that works at my local Napa to verify this.

Hope this helps!

Thanks! Hubby is off to the parts store to see about getting that one. Fingers crossed it fits. :)

I just replaced the pinion seal on my DRW Dana 70 last year and don't remember having any problems getting the new seal? I believe I got it from NAPA? Even so, once you get the old one out then you can take it with out to the parts store for matching.

That's what we're going to have to do. The problem is of course tying up our mechanic's shop while we do this as we have to drive to the next town for parts.

I tried Napa's online cross reference and the 42449 seal crosses to a Dana 60 axle seal. The 528959 number does not cross.
this is the only seal I could find at Napa, https://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/Cata ... 28+2028036 and it appears to be new obsolete stock. I found a national number 6808N listed for serial number g90000 and down. Autozone has it mail order. The break seems to be in 1971 for dana 70's. Are you sure about old cr number I can't find any reference to it any where. seal numbers are normally easy to cross.

I hope this helps

Thanks Wes! Our mechanic took the seal out and wrote down the number, so he could have made a mistake. He actually tried to straighten it out a bit and put it back in, and lo and behold it hasn't leaked since. But since the right seal is not easy to find I think I will try and get one anyway for when it does start to leak again. Thanks for those numbers!
